Oh wow, I hadn't thought of it but your thread has reminded me that one of my friends worked there. Shame it closed down, it was a nice familar face.

It is a bit of a shame but they didn't ever go after a specific market. Trying to be too general is usually a recipe for disaster, since I never really needed the shop. =/

I adore Wal-Mart. But that's not being general as such. That's just being specific to several million different products. Wal-Mart wouldn't work if it was in a small building. But if I needed something random like a strip-plug or something random like that, I'd find myself going to Wilkinsons or whatever. Wal-Mart works generally in small places where it substitutes for anything that a town may lack.

Besides that, the clothes are really good value actually. Levis for $19, trust me, that's amazing. They sell for around £70 here, that's somewhere around $105. =]

The Wal-Mart I found myself at over the summer every now and again had an entire aisle devoted to archery! I could spend hours in that shop... woolworths isn't quite like that. It seemed to sell nothing that anyone really needs.

No, I spent three months in America last summer. But in fairness, Asda is owned by Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is like asda on crack.

Mark, my ex-partner worked for them for 13 years, and lost his job on Tuesday, a few days after our local store closed. Many of the staff had worked there for years, for some of their all their working lives. There are not many stores that get that sort of staff loyalty. Mark was happy there and would have stayed there indefinitely had the place remained open.

He is now trying to find another job, which is not going to be easy this time of year and in the current economic slowdown.

i miss woolies! To be honest though, its not like i used to go in and get anything recently but i just remember as a kid going in and running to the back of the toy section! Also at high school, getting my weekly copy of smash hits (!!!) and at college just popping in for sweets! Its just always been there! Walked past it yesterday and was sad to see it just as a gutted empty shop floor!

I don't think so. Woolworths Limited only operate in Australia and New Zealand. Must be a different store but with the same name.
For those who don't know, Woolworths down here is one of Australia's largest supermarket chains (it's called Safeway in Victoria).

I'm guessing the UK Woolworths was a hypermarket?

Edit: Yeah it's different. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolworths_Group
