Advice and education (bar all the misinformation floating around anyways). I've learned a lot of interesting things online, and expanded my worldview, something I couldn't have done at least to this extent if I didn't have the internet. I also think that social communication, something like EC, is also part of the best. It links in with advice and education, we can all learn a lot from each other of course, but it's not just that. Connecting with people in this way would have been next to impossible without the internet.

Besides that: entertainment, music, media, whatnot.

    Knowledge of all kind.

There is information about almost anything if you spend time and effort educating yourself about it.

Nah, but I've learned a whole hell of a lot of things since my indoctrination into the internet master race, how would I learn how to cook a pork shoulder without it? I'd have to open.... A BOOK! *cue dramatic music here*

I can think of a few things that apply to me personally.

A source of knowledge. The internet has helped me figure out a lot of things, whether it's small stuff, or concepts that have rattled my world and how I see it. The internet helped me escape, for starters, from a batshit crazy religion after being able to question the teachings pounded into my head as a child. Now I'm a quite contented atheist who no longer fears an impending "Armageddon". Thank you, internet. [IMG]

A way to socialize, as well. I never had many friends growing up and the internet is how I socialize, with the added benefit of not having to actually be stuck in a room talking to people face-to-face.

And the internet helps me keep up with my beloved Borussia. I'm a misplaced German who lives halfway around the world, and I can still keep up with my team like I'm right there in Dortmund. Can't go wrong with that.

The ability to connect and interact with people that one would never meet without it. The number of irl friends I have now who I met through various online means is ridiculous (notably my girlfriend of 5 and a half years, and my other best friend who I love to pieces).

I second everyone who says advice and information as well! It's such a big deal that the internet allows us to find information on damn near anything, and collectively gives us the opportunity to become a truly powerful source of media (especially on things 'the media' fail to give a place in the spotlight, or skews).

Oh, and memes and cute animal videos. Those too.

My funny side wants to scream "PORN!" but I really think it's how much information is on the internet. I would have never understood my (lack of) gender identity or passed some classes without it. Thank you, internet!

It gives us socially inept/anxious people a place to be somewhat social.

At one time -- the mid to late 90s -- it was the freedom from an over saturated world of advertisements and rules. The Internet then was really a lot like the Wild West. Most folks stayed in town (e-mail, some official websites, maybe a gaming site or two), but some of us, like yours truly, ventured far beyond town into Gulch Valley... where we learned the world is not as normal or upstanding as it likes to pretend it is.

That, to me, is the best thing that the Internet offered. Now, it's fine, but it still feels too... invasive. It's enjoyable, but not as fun.

As of recently, I'd say the connectivity. You can really encounter some entertaining sources or fascinating individuals.
