I thought we'd already had a thread on this, but a search came up with no results.

It seems like all of the snakes around my house have decided to come out for a last slither before winter, so I thought I'd make a poll to see how the EC populace feels about the little cuties.

Now that would be quite ironic, wouldn't it?

And justifiably so, being from Australia.

As for me, I love snakes. I think they're beautiful, fascinating creatures. I wanted a pet snake when I was a kid but my mom said hell no. I obviously am wary of poisonous snakes if I'm going to be in wooded areas, but I wouldn't call it fear.

I'm terrified of every snake except a Ball Python. Ball Pythons are cool.

It depends on whether or not it's venomous. I have snakes at my aquarium, and I handle them. But I would not touch a venomous snake.

When I was younger I was terrified of them. Now not as bad but still don't want to touch them and find them fairly interesting. I do get a really weird reaction of some sort that I've never heard described by anyone else. If I come across a snake I get a loud thrumming in my ears. No idea what causes it but it happens every time for as long as I can remember.

As a kid, I tried to learn everything I could about them. Now that I am older, I always keep an eye out for them. Venomous snakes should never be handled for any reason unless you are a trained professional. Remember, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. Unless it is a black mamba. Then you are in deep, DEEP trouble.

    Yep.

I hate snakes. Fear of them is called herpetophobia. That makes me a herpetophobe. In the U.S., we have venomous and non-venomous varieties. I think the world sees us as having rattlesnakes, which we do have, mostly in the southern part of the U.S. However, we also have copperheads, coral snakes, and water moccasins which are venomous.

Their venom level varies. I have heard that water moccasins are the most aggressive and I'm not sure whether the stories I've heard are tall tales. The others really do not want an encounter with humans and will bite when cornered or are surprised.

The problem is that, if you are bitten, you have to act quickly and smartly. The sooner they start the anti-venom, the better you will fare. The more time it takes to get help might mean that you will get sicker and possibly sustain some neurological damage. I like the outdoors, so I don't like snakes. And I don't want to look at one long enough to try to figure out what kind of snake it is.

Definitively afraid. Can't say that I have ever warmed up to them, including non-venomous snakes.

No. I was the kid always interested in nature, and I think snakes are awesome! Yes, there may be dangerous ones, but they should be treated with respect, not fear.

Snakes are adorable in my opinion. I had a pet snake named Cleo at one point. I particularly like pythons and, as I call them, mucile snakes. They feel different when you hold them. Its like water wrapping around your skin, massaging you. The feel of other snakes dull in comparison.
The issue with pythons is that they get so big you need, NEED two people to care for them after a while. They get to be 6ft long or longer. Females get bigger than males. They're STRONG bbs.

Growing up, I LOVED snakes and my parents would take me to the snake farm or zoo almost every other weekend. Then, I began to HATE them. They are slimy (not really), dirty (not really), evil (debatable, but why did Satan take on a snake form :lol:slight_smile:, and poisonous (not all). Living in Texas we have a few poisonous ones like the rattlesnake. My grandpa had this hook tool he'd use to decapitate them. He'd then skin them and cook them haha. The one benefit of living in the city is the relative lack of snakes.

Still, I'm fascinated with various venoms and the way different kinds act on the body. Thank goodness for antivenin and especially polyvalent ones like Crofab that can be used for various species of rattlers or families of snakes and specific species identification isn't always needed.

Also, if someone has snakes or creepy crawlers as pets, it's a bit deal breaker.
