Yes- I took many, many years of swimming lessons as a kid, eventually passed the highest level, while simultaneously being completely frightened by overly-deep water. I could float, but looking down at the abyss below was quite terrifying for a 10 year old me.

I haven't been swimming for many years now actually, but I'm fairly confident I can still stay afloat and paddle ungracefully to keep myself from sinking, or awkwardly move myself a certain distance across water. But yes, I do know how.

    Well, of course!

What else would I do with the tears of my enemies, but use them to fill my pool?

I don't think I actually know someone who can't swim (apart from due to disability or age, of course).

That is partly why I'm asking. I had subconsciously assumed that this is just one of those things that come naturally to people, like learning how to walk, but I was surprised recently by some gals who absolutely refused to go anywhere near the deep end of the pool. I offered to serve as a human buoy for one of them, which we both quickly regretted since she promptly had me in a death-clutch. She was terrified. So now I wonder, is this common?

I'm not a graceful swimmer myself, but as the poll mentions, I can get around. I'll live lol. I've always wanted to take lessons and learn proper swimming technique tho. I should get around that.

I'm good until I get to the deep end, then I have issues.

I might have you in a death-clutch, too, but it won't be because I'm terrified...

Yes. Learned when I was a kid. I'm not an avid swimmer but I haven't forgotten how.

I can doggy-paddle - sort of. I can't do it for an extended period of time, but I'm fairly certain I could keep it up for about a minute, possibly more. I also really, really hate going underwater, so I would be doomed if I got tossed into a lake.

When I was younger, my parents forced me and my sister into a massive amount of swimming lessons - all of which failed - neither me or my sister would willingly go under water. Most of the teachers would dunk us multiple times a class (one actually went to 15 times) and I believe that is partly the reason why I hate the water so much now.

When I was younger, I was very good (not great) at swimming. When we went to the beach, I was always in the ocean. One time I actually saved my brother from drifting with the tide: Have no idea where I got the energy or mind set, but I grabbed him from certain doom and he was extremely grateful. He was kinda screaming for help and I was the only person who seemed to notice him drifting to the ocean. The lifeguard apparently did not notice anything... I should also mention since he IS my little brother, I tried bringing him in the deep sections of the pool when we were younger and he was scared sh!tless. Just your everyday brotherly love :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Anyways, I have no idea if I can still swim or not. The last time I was in a pool/body of water was over 6 years ago and I did just fine. The only thing I can not do is dive.

Babies are fascinating because they have natural swimming reflexes (like holding their breath underwater and making swimming motions), but they don't actually know how to swim and will lose said reflexes after the first 6 months. So, clearly we have adapted to be able to swim. I'm curious as to what holds some of us back. Is it a lack of exposure to large bodies of water? Is it fear of drowning? Could it be a trauma linked to water? I wonder...

You betta have a firm grip. I can be pretty slippery when I want to

EDIT: Hoooo, the plot thickens. So some of you have trouble diving/swimming underwater uh? That's frankly what I do best. I can hold my breath for long periods of time and overall I'm considerably swifter underwater than I am on the surface.

    I know how to swim.

I've met a couple of people who are absolutely terrified of going to the deepend of the pool. Some people just panic.

Let me tell you something. I lived in Florida for almost 12 years. I was the only goddamned kid in the state who couldn't and wouldn't swim. I eventually learned how to doggy paddle and if I got thrown overboard or fell into a body of water I could stay afloat for a while I get.

But for the life of me, I don't know why going to the pool is fun. If I wanted to cool off I'd rather stand around in a walk-in freezer. I mean, jesus. The chlorine burns and half the time some idiot thinks it's okay to piss in the pool so you're swimming around in a toilet with 50 other people who wear all too revealing swim suits. And then you're constantly stepping on children.

If I'm gonna swim, it's either gonna be in a private pool or in a river. Cause at least a river ain't stagnant.

Yes. I learned in my 20s. Most of my life I had a huge terror of water, and one attempt at swim lessons when I was young made things worse.

I am not very good; however, I am competent enough to lap swim for exercise now.

I can swim enough to save my life (I live by the sea so it's quite important) but I haven't swam in ages since I don't enjoy it and it was compulsory up until I was 11.
