For everyone to be truly equal, do we all have to be the same?

Interesting concept that I got thinking about from the "What is Normal" thread.

    Does true equality even exist?

Do we all have to be the same? The answer to this should be a resounding "no". People should be treated equally simply on the basis of being human.

Unfortunately a great chunk of the world doesn't seem to think like that.

    I agree.
But the "great chunk of the world" might see their opinions as ideal, and their definition of equality would be different from mine, or yours, or anyone else's. Which definition is right, which one truly means to be equal?

To be truly equal would mean that everyone is treated exactly the same, regardless of race, religion, sexuality, socio-economic status etc. It means that one group would have the same rights as all the others, and not be treated as different or inferior for any reason.

At least that's how I see it. [IMG]

Nope. It sounds like BS cooked up by the person who wrote The Giver.

It's impossible to have 'true' equality, because how do you treat a disabled person and an athlete the same? How do you treat a vegetarian and someone who pretty much only eats meat the same?

It is less about true equality than understanding diversity among us.

I would agree with this. Everyone gets the same fair shake at life.

There are plenty who disagree and believe that certain groups should be given special considerations based on some aspect of their identity because reasons.

For me, the main distinction I draw is between "perfect" equality and "true" equality, I think. Perfect equality would mean, like, every person in the world receives an income of, let's say $7000/month. That's a bit... weird. Or so I think. A truly equal society, in my opinion, is a society which wholeheartedly strives to counteract extreme inequality and making sure that no one has to go without food or water or shelter, or human rights, etc. And everyone are encouraged to fulfill their own potential and be who they are, of course.
