To those outside of, or not from, the USA... What is your opinion of Americans?

Please give your honest opinion, as I'm generally curious.

Very confident, friendly, determined, imaginative, like to act superior (beyond normal patriotism, to the point of being insulting), love to eat, rash, stubborn.
But these are generalisations and stereotypes so they don't really have any value - and I wouldn't commit to any of them fully.

Everyone's different but the same type of people turn up anywhere and everywhere!

    Sorry!

I try not to form opinions based on where the person is from, so Americans are just the same people to me like everyone else - some are great, others not so much.

Believe it or not, most of us are not egotistic, overweight, McDonald's lovin' rednecks like the stereotypes tell you. It's basically a warmer version of Canada, and things are a bit cheaper here. Not too much else, though.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but people in my area are... Um... something. They're something. I guess.

I like them. Sure they might not be the nicest to foreigners but Americans are, generally, pretty amazing and so diverse too.

I dunno, I'm American. It really depends on where you are and even then it's hard to generalize. We're an interesting and diverse bunch.

I've spoken to Americans on the forum, and they were really nice, but I've only met one American face to face, so I'm not in a position to say, but there are a lot of stereotypes in Britain about you guys, so I'll tell you a few of them.

    - You're friendly, but a little too friendly. Apparently, you can't even walk into a shop in America without someone coming up to meet you like 'hey, I'm Jeff, how're doing? Can I help you with anything?'. Not sure if that really happens or not, like I said, these are the local stereotypes.

    - You think British accents are sexy..?

    - You ask British people to say things a lot so you can hear how different it sounds. (A load of American kids did this to me online. They were asking me to say water bottle, and they found it hilarious that I pronounced it 'war-ter bot-tle' :/ They then said 'wow, she can't even speak English?' I think they were just winding me up though)

    - You have to salute a flag every morning and school and recite an oath about how free you are. This one sounds like bullcrap to me, but if it's true, it's kind of scary.

    - You're very family orientated.

    - You carry guns in Wal-Mart? :/

    - You don't like gun control.

    - You don't get sarcasm.

Basically, a lot of the stereotypes are about how you're nice people, but you're too nice  Britain is not a very sociable place, I guess. I'm sorry if any of these offended you, like I said they're just stereotypes.

Those are some of the most eerily accurate stereotypes I've ever heard. I'm American, haha, and I find this absolutely interesting.

The only one that I'd attest as untrue is the sarcasm bit. I've met loads of Americans who are very adept at using sarcasm (especially in my family) though I find it quite annoying to be honest.

Well, I'll tell you two things Canadians really don't like about Americans...

The majority of you don't bother to learn anything about your neighbours to the north.
    What does that say?

You don't take action against the gun violence in your country, so the death toll of innocent people continues, and many American guns get smuggled into Canada.

I also don't know if we can ever forgive your women's hockey team for stomping on our flag which they had on the floor in their dressing room before an Olympic game. Motivated our women to beat you for the gold medal, so dumb move on their part.

Two things we like about Americans is you defend democracy for other countries at great cost to yourselves. In the end, where would the world be without the USA's power to offset Russia, China, ISIS, etc ?

You give billions of dollars of aid to other countries which is generally not recognized or appreciated.

IOW... God bless America and Americans.

    They are...uh...people?

Lots of crazy ones, but lots of nice ones too. If you read the news alone though, it seems like the place is constantly locked in a gang war between two political parties and shenanigans happens daily.

If I take into account all the Americans I've had the chance to chat with or meet, I'd say it's pretty wrong to label Americans as being similar or a unit.

Just like everyone else, Americans are very different between each other, depending on their background, their location and their situation.

The only thing I seemed to find to be equal in quite a few is that they seem to think they rule the world or that they are the best country (which, in a way is true, don't get me wrong, but it's not very humbling to say so).
