Does anyone else just loathe the existence of Black Friday?

I hate it for two reasons

1.) It comes the day after Thanksgiving. It's like "Hey let's celebrate the things we already have and then the very next day get in a fist fight over the things we don't have" It's hypocrisy at it's finest.

2.) It's so poorly handled. How many people get hurt, beat up, trampled, and once even shot? It's sad and disgusting. If we want to have a big shopper holiday like this we really really need to find a better way to do it. Right now it's basically the purge.

    Anyone else agree?

I completely agree with you. For some reason the UK has jumped on the Black Friday bandwagon and last year was horrendous.

I didn't know about it until last year ... but people thought I should have known about because I'm part Canadian.

I usually go. In fact I'm a little bummed that I couldn't get the day off this year so I will be at the office.

I have to say I think there's a lot of sensationalizing that goes on around the day--what can I say? people like to feel smugly self-congratulatory. I've always enjoyed Black Friday. My husband and I really enjoy Christmas and Black Friday kind of kicks it off. Everything is decorated to the nines. They play Christmas music. We enjoy the hustle and bustle. And I have to say I've been shopping on Black Friday probably at least 20 times over the years and I've never encountered anything like the footage they show on the news. I've never had or seen an altercation. I've never camped out. We actually don't even shop that much--we'll usually get an ornament (just one because we buy most of our Christmas décor on Boxing Day), maybe some linens and stocking stuffers, a video game or something. It's more just about being out and about and festive.

I've seen it. I worked at walmart and watched two people fist fight over towels...it's a thing that happens.

My problem isn't really with black friday itself. I don't care for it much, but it's not necessarily bad.

My problem is with the date, and how poorly managed it is.

They need to move it to another day ( at least a week after Thanksgiving or something ) and put in place a system that prevents customers from being able to trample and beat each other.

    That's where my issue lies.

Oh well, WalMart. Yeah, I imagine that sort of thing happening every day there. I guess I can see the appeal of being smugly self-congratulatory after all. Yeah working at WalMart on Black Friday does sound terrible.

Overrated. Cyber Monday is better. I get deals just as good (if not better) without having to actually deal with the hordes. Or leaving the house.

It's really stereotypically American when you think about it.
"Let's spend today giving thanks for all that we have, and tomorrow let's trample people for a bargain!"

    Yes, I hate it too.

I am not quite sure why it got imported over to the UK in the first place. After the chaos of last year I am glad to hear that at least a few shops have decided they'll not be partaking in Black Friday this time round. It looked like the London riots all over again (okay it clearly wasn't that bad, but some of the scenes were shocking).

I'm glad England doesn't do thanksgiving because of the aforementioned hypocrisy...

I don't hate it but I don't love it. It's just "there", for me. I couldn't care less whether it existed or not. But I do think
    is pretty ironic.

You know what's the best? Cyber Monday.

It's the worst. All it does is promote greed and take workers away from their families. If it were up to me there would be a law banning it.

I've only been shopping on Black Friday once and it was later in the day so most of the crowds had already gone home. I don't typically leave the house unless I have to. It's a ridiculous day. Cyber Monday is the best and I can't wait for the year when I have the money to burn to enjoy it.

I avoid going out on this day, unless it's to the local Tavern for a bite to eat and perhaps a Martini.

Black Friday is indeed an Evil day; I've thought it would be fun to buy some skunk oil/musk (found at hunting supply stores) and secretly disperse it about a busy shopping mall, as I laughed, watching people's dismay, as they fled the scene of such a foul odor.

But as I am such an angel, this remains a fantasy.

I think the police have told stores to beef up their staffing and security in anticipation of Black Friday madness. Many forces will only attend this year if there is a serious breach of the peace or violence.
