Quick and simple question with a poll for the EC voters.

When decorating the christmas tree, do you add lights or go without?

When I decorate a tree, lights are included. Always.

Indeed, a tree looks naked without lights. The tree in the corner of my elementary school cafeteria had no lights, and it always looked strange to my eyes. No idea why there were no lights. Safety (fire worries)? Energy savings (this was late 70s/early 80s during the energy crisis era)? Or hard to put lights due to the tall tree?

The last full tree I decorated (6/7 feet tall?)--the last Christmas we were in my childhood home--had a full collection of lights--big bulbs that lit the tree up, bubbling lights, and small blinking lights. Plug that baby in, and the lights all across the west coast dimmed a moment.

Then, for about 20 years, I did no trees, except other's, and those were pretty much dictacted by what those others wanted. In every case, however, the tree was A) fake (shudder!), and B) had lights (the small mini lights--one had colored, one had only clear, which I despise).

Between then (ca. 1990) and about 2010, I decorated zero trees of my own. Then, a few years, I did a small tree (the sort that often gets plopped on a table). Lights were included, but a lot more modest. Typically small mini lights (some constantly on, some flashing), and a short strand of C7 lights with a few bubbling lights.

But the correct vote for this poll might be "don't bother with a tree." I didn't do one last year, and so far no tree this year. I like trees, but it's hard getting enthusiasm, particularly as I struggle with seasonal depression, feeling that this time of year has nothing for me except lonely isolation. It may be best to let trees go for those who have families or friends to gather with.

    ---------- Post added 13th Dec 2015 at 02:39 PM ----------

To some degree, I hate white lights. My biggest hatred is for the small mini lights that are clear. I tolerate exactly one clear bulb per strand of mini lights: the blinker bulb (which causes the strand to flash). I might have burried that bulb totally, even though it was small and only a single bulb, except the blinker bulb was always a weak point on those lights.

On larger C7 lights, which was our standard light-the-tree-light, there were many white bulbs. Although it was always a whitish coating in the bulb, not a clear bulb. I didn't actively hate these, but they were easily my least favorite. For "critical bulb locations", I'd engineer things so that some other color would featured.

As I write this, I wonder if my tree decorating years back wasn't another sign I'm gay. How many straight guys worry about bulb colors, and have "critical bulb locations"?

I have mixed feelings about another approach--using one or two colors. Say all the lights green. Or a mix of blue and green. That can look sort of attractive, and is probably more tasteful design. I could see doing something like this in some cases. But...I really like the explosion of all colors--red, orange, blue, and green--on a Christmas tree.

Definitely lights. I didn't realize not having lights was even a thing.

Is that even a question? Ha ha. There should be a "Do you prefer Christmas trees with white lights or multiple-colored lights?"

I buy fake trees that come with lights. I've never really seen Christmas trees without lights on them, except a few 3 feet ones.

What I hate though, is when one the light bulbs go out and it ruins like a whole row of lights on the tree and it takes forever to find which one it was.

Lights, man! Colored, no LED. I like the warm glow that traditional colored lights give off.
