I keep seeing lesbians calling themselves hella gay, super gay and a bunch of other variations on that. I feel like this is some kind of inside joke I don't understand.
I've seen this too and I don't get it either. I tried looking it up but I can't find anything on it. It's kinda bugging me.

I think it just means "I'm really gay and idc" gays and lesbians both say it. Like Joshy said, it means they are super tomboy. When gays say it they mean that they are really feminine.
Yeah, as someone who says that a lot, it's mainly just like...joking that you're not just gay, you're REALLY gay. Hella gay. So gay. Super, super gay. I wouldn't say it's always about being extremely tomboyish or masculine, though? Sometimes it's in reference to common gay stereotypes that you personally happen to fall into. Sometimes it's just brought up in reference to same-gender people or characters one finds really attractive - you might be 'hella gay for'...I don't know, say, Ellen Page, or Chloe Price from Life is Strange. (I mean, if you're gay for Chloe Price that's kind of automatically 'hella' gay, but that's beside the point.)

I haven't heard anyone use the word "hella" in ages, but I don't really think there is any specific meaning, nor do I think it has anything to do with "masculine" or "feminine." I think it's pretty much just the gay equivalent of saying something like, dude I just saw the new Star Wars movie for the 10th time, I'm such a nerd.
