There's a very long story behind this, but I was wondering if anyone knew...what is the horizontal length, preferably in miles, across Great Britain? If you can provide a source, that would be great, because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I suppose you mean the lenght of England and Scotland combined on its longest axle? The greatest distance is between Lands' End and John O' Groats, which would be 874 miles. Add about 20 miles if you measure shore to shore, a whole lot more if you reach out as far as st. Kilda and the Channel Islands.
Those 874 miles is '' as the crow flies '' In 2005 I rode the route per bike, and I can tell you it was a bit further, lots of detours (wouldn't and shouldn't miss them too)
The width is about 300 miles max. along the prime meridian, I believe.
