My friends Danny and Ian were standing in the queue to get food, when some random people just asked 'what gender are you?'. First of all they had their hair cut short (Ian kind of looks like Dan from Dan and Phil), so you can't tell what gender they are from their appearance. Both of them are generally quiet when talking to strangers, Ian just avoids it as much as possible. So basically they were there just standing, not sure what to say, because they are A-Gender (Danny) and Gender Fluid (Ian).

What do you say to strangers when you don't want to tell the whole story?

I just say something quick and offer a distraction or change the subject a lot of the time. ^^

Luckily these days I don't really get asked that question as much as I used to - I wouldn't have the confidence my younger self did now! My answers tended to depend on how people asked the question, if the situation felt safe enough I'd probably give a watered-down version of the truth. Otherwise I'd just say I'm a girl.

(I did have some little kids ask last year if I was a boy or a girl when I was dressed as a vampire for Halloween, haha. I told them I was just a vampire, which seemed to be a satisfactory answer for them. I trust kids a lot more with that question than adults because they generally accept the answer!)

I'm cisgender so luckily I don't get asked. But it must be so annoying. I'd just avoid answering because of the phobic people out there.

I would just say I'm a boy, because it's true.

I wish I had some real advice to give to non binary people in those situations, though. :frowning2:

Maybe this? I don't like you so it's none of your business. [or maybe this is more for sexuality].

I'm not non-binary of course so my answer would probably be "I'm a guy, asshole". I guess if I were in your friends' position I'd say something like "And you care why?"

I used to get asked that all day in high school before I knew I was trans.

I would just make some comeback at them like : ''why do you feel the need to know?'', ''Don't you have anything better to do?, ''That's none of your business.''

In other words, they don't have to answer anything. In fact, I would encourage them to not say it. It's none of their business to know.

I get this question all the time and have been getting it since I was young. Most of the time it was "Are you a boy or a girl?" with kids at school and I would ignore it, because I thought they where teasing, knowing my gender (turns out they didn't and it was a genuine question) and sometimes people would automatically assume my gender and call me those pronouns. It never bothered me much, mistaking me for a guy made me feel kinda happy inside.

    I'm androgyne/genderqueer.

Personally? I love when someone can't tell. I'd reply with either, "Yes" or, "Guess". :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I would say I'm ME, people usually assume that I'm male because I still look male, unfortunately so I don't get asked this.

People assume I'm male already, those who don't know me personally, and I don't correct them. I don't care.

My standard answer is "What, you can't tell?"

I've only had one person who was straight up like "No, I can't," to which I shrugged and walked away. Otherwise the asker ends up picking a side ("Well, I thought you were ____, I just wanted to make sure..."), and I can choose whether to confirm/correct them, or leave it be.

I have very long hair so ice had a few times when people mistook me for a female from behind but they quickly realize I'm male when they see my face.

If no one can tell there is no meed to get offended and use dirty words... I should'not be talking though because I'm sure I have the biggest potty mouth out of everyone on here jk jk. But I'd answer politely and say we're boys.
