Okay so a classmate asked me my music preferences, I answered,"Beatles, Black Sabbath, My Chemical Romance, Rihanna, Eminem and much more." His reaction,"You listen to MCR? Are you Emo? You are okay right?". What followed was a huge argument about music, him linking emo to 'gay' and whiny and me, well saying that Linkin Park is overrated (that guys loves LP, hurts na) That left me pissed and I just googled emo. The results were pretty shocking. I know Emo is depressing at times and very angsty too, but never realized it was such a nasty stereotype! Here's a link. What do you guys think?
Well, your username used MCR in it . I've never been into "emo." I once walked into an "emo" store (Hot Topic) and felt so out of place (this was as a teenager). People who dress "emo" also seem weird to me. Do you really need to wear all black, studded belts, and combat boots to look "edgy" and "angst-y?"
Emo's do have a pretty shitty reputation, I'm pretty closely associated with a lot of them and kind of consider myself one. Mcr is usually considered a very emo band but you don't have to be emo to like them. If you don't want to call yourself emo, then don't.
I am often called Emo, but only on the internet, in here the term is much more amped perhaps than in the U.S, Emo is known for being angsty somewhat started with some rock bands in the late 80's and a friend of mine (who is actually emo) told me that was the real term back then, a musical refference, i think in modern days most teens following the emo trend (not all) have adopted the ''cutting'' thing for who knows what reason, i think that last part is the one that gives the modern term a bad rep but i could be wrong, the problem with labels in general that some people take them far too in-depht and forget is a label in the first place
*shrugs* MCR is one of my favorite bands, they are good to listen to when coping with mental health problems. They've helped me a lot. I like a couple other bands in that vein, like AFI, Pierce The Veil, Fall Out Boy, Panic! (If that still counts :lol but I don't dress emo at all, or follow the mindset. I use music to help me get past my struggles, not wallow in them. My sister dresses emo, though, and it actually suits her. To each their own.
