    Did you vote early?

Just a poll question. But I also have a question that I don't know the answer to and need somebody who knows what they're talking about.

    Does early voting matter?

Like, my mom has always said that early voting is only used if there is a recount triggered. Otherwise those ballots don't matter. They get counted but don't matter unless it's a tie or near tie. I don't know how that works for primaries or if that's different on actual election day.

I always believed her but now I don't know because friends of mine are voting and nobody's heard anything about that ever mattering.

    I don't know okay.

I voted early, in person. I believe in-person early voting is included into the Election Day results, especially since we use electronic machines that tabulate votes instantly. That said, I do believe absentee ballots fall into the "we don't count them on Election Day but the results don't really matter because they won't really influence the final certified results."

That said, by that logic a Democrat in Texas shouldn't vote for president because their vote doesn't count, or a Republican in New York. Voting is about making their voice heard, even when you are clearly in the minority.

We don't have official early voting here in Michigan, but we do have absentee voting. I mailed in my absentee ballot three weeks out, as I will be in Orlando, Florida on March 8 and can't visit the polls. Aside from the first time I voted, I've never voted in person (as state law says the first time you vote has to be in person, and after that you can get an absentee ballot for pretty much any election), and have no plans to.

The current law in Michigan regarding absentee voting is kind of funny. You must check a box that certifies that you fall into one of the following categories (straight off the request form):

-I am 60 years or older
-I will be absent from the community the entire time the polls are open
-I am physically unable to attend the polls due to disability
-I have been appointed an election inspector
-I am confined to jail awaiting trial

I voted on the day of. Everyone said there would be crazy lineups. It wasn't actually that crowded. It probably took me twenty minutes at the most.

I didn't know I could vote now. The primaries haven't been held in California yet.

The first significant election here will take place November 4th, so the question's a bit out of context. I'm signed up for an absentee ballot when that time does come around though, yes.
