I literally laughed out loud when I read the title of this post! I can't believe some people think that it's not an issue anymore????????? As if biphobia, homophobia, transphobia, etc doesn't exist anymore because "hey, you can now put a ring on it." Personally I think that it will always be an issue. People can't accept the fact that not everyone is hetero or homosexual (because of bi-erasure and erasure of anyone who is part of the grey area). As far as I'm concerned people still need to fight for their rights and stand up because it'll be a never ending battle. There will always be people who think that being anything other than a cisgendered het person is wrong.

There are people in the West that call for the execution of gay people. Nazi style. My ass there's no more LGBT prejudice.

PFFFFFFFFT. :lol: I'm highly doubtful that those who prejudice against those of the LGBT+ community have completely disappeared off the face of the earth. And I think they'll always be there. Some people may just never learn that love can come in a variety of forms and that it can be defined differently for everybody.

And as for why we still are standing up for this movement? Because if nobody speaks up, we won't get anywhere. We want to fight for being able to love who we can love and honestly I don't think the fight will ever end. Sure we're doing notably better now than years ago, but who's to say that if we stop standing up for this community, even if you're straight, our progress may just go backwards and it could get dangerous again. As another person has said, we could be pushed back to square one. Lastly, we could lose the awareness that we have now about the LGBT community if we just simply shut up.

 

If they're saying it in the United States, it's as simple as "You've never been to the Bible Belt, have you?"

As long as there are two people on Earth, someone will be prejudiced. I can't even wrap my head around how ignorant you have to be to think that people who identify as LGBT are no longer prejudiced. Just because we've been experiencing more rights in recent years doesn't remove the years of hatred and stigma that have been placed upon the LGBT community. There still exists vast numbers of people who will go out of there way to make people from the LGBT community feel inferior to them. It's almost as if hatred of the LGBT community has blended itself into everyday culture.

 

Pshhhh, that's an ignorant statement. Homophobia still exists, even transphobia are being bought more into the spotlight. The fight is not over.

 

There's no oppression of gay people in the west, but the B and T are oppressed. Anyone saying there's no prejudice against LGBT doesn't know what that words means.

 

Considering many American states don't even have simple discrimination laws to protect gay people from being fired, I'd say that isn't even remotely true - though I'd agree that in most of Western Europe and parts of North America gay people are fully protected by the law. It's the mindset of certain people that hasn't caught up. Being gay in Alabama or Mississippi probably sucks - constantly under threat from angry homophobes who want to murder you. Can't imagine anywhere worse in the West. Suppose that's what religious fundamentalism does - but Christians have a long and rich history of attacking and belittling anyone who is different to they are, which is why I'm happy to live in a largely secular country.

Using that logic though, countries like the UK have anti-discrimination laws in place for all minorities, not just gay people, so state-sanctioned oppression doesn't exist at all. If anything the opposite is true - governments are actively going out of their way to prevent that kind of thing from happening. In theory, everyone here has equal opportunity, but that obviously doesn't play out in reality for a variety of reasons - those reasons usually not being as simple, or as clear cut, as certain individuals would like to think. It's also hard to prove outright that discrimination has occurred, especially during the job searching process where you're usually non-the-wiser as to why you weren't chosen for a particular role (well, in any of the jobs I've applied to nobody has ever bothered to tell me why I wasn't successful).

the dude has a point... feeling sorry for yourself won't get you anywhere sure there are haters and nazis and this and that around the whole world but let's be reasonable, all you can do is wait for a better tomorrow. you can't change people by shouting nonsense through a megaphone nobody cares about.
