I love the label queer. It describes my sexuality and my values very well. Unfortunately I hate the way that word sounds. I'm just not comfortable saying it out loud. Is there any words that have the same meaning as queer?

Yes, but they are not considered friendly! Take a look at synonyms for queer...

You could always stick with gay or LGBT, and depending on the situation, like if someone were to ask you your orientation, you could be humorous and simply say rainbow(s) or pride in lieu of queer. You could even just say love is love or love wins as a reference.

Also, sometimes if someone is relatively new to the community (sorry I don't know you very well) they might find saying the word queer as uncomfortable at first. I went through that and only just recently got into saying it.

But honestly, you can always just be creative (of if you want to be funny and confusing, look into latin/greek roots and make up your own word).

LGBT works fine, or even "unlabeled".

Queer just means unusual, oddball, or freakshow. It's relation to the LGBT community was due to straights considering us "freaks" in the past and using it a slur against us. Thus, the positive umbrella term was just supposed to be reclaiming the slur for us, saying we're "proud to be odd".

But with that being said, not all LGBT people are comfortable with queer because of It's true definition and past history. Usually these people will just put down Bi, questioning, or unsure but open-minded instead.

What Loli said is very much true.

I'm among the political queers who love the word though. It feels like,
Cis-hetero person: "What's your orientation if not straight?"
    Me: "Queer."
(Cis-hetero tries to put me in a box but fails since I've already put myself in the box of "weird".)

You could always say 'not straight/not cis'. Personally, I love the words queer, but, like others have said before me, a lot of people find it to be rude or derogatory.

    I like 'queer'.

JRR Tolkien once wrote that "there's queer folk in Buckland", and those people could kick butt

Btw, one thing that annoys me is when people hold 'queer' as being synonymous with 'gay'. It's not. It basically means 'not straight'.

Of the alternatives, I prefer "strange". But frankly, I'd say just get over it and use "queer". As Wolfie says, it's the language of Tolkien!

I love the word queer. Odd, strange, weird. I'm all of them. Wear it with pride
