So I really really love polos, and I've been told I look good in them. The thing is, being new to men's wear, I'm a little confused on the formality of them. As in, are they acceptable to wear to school? Or do they look too fancy? I'm not a super preppy dresser, I love my hoodies, so I'm not sure if I would look that out of place wearing them.

Any advice? (I just don't wanna look like a dork XD)

Around here when I was in school, we either had to wear button-ups or polos when our dress code got super strict. In general, they seem really casual to me. Maybe you can put your own flavor and style into things if you're not super preppy.

I consider polos to be "casual, yet put together." However, due to the increase in informality in America, for which I could write a whole treatise on, polos are generally seen as acceptable for many social situations. However, if the level of formality of an event is not sure and you want to err on the side of caution use an Oxford shirt.

I have many polo shirts. Most of them are either Polo Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Brooks Brothers, or Southern Tide.

Since I was born I think I was groomed to dress preppy. I still have my very first navy blazer with brass buttons I had when I was a little toddler

Oh, god, those 90s abominations, they should all be burned to ashes...

I think polos are better looking than T-shirts. Got a couple of them in black, and they go well with jeans and sneakers, between casual and well dressed, but not overdressed.

Bright colored polos with chinos would definitely be seen as dorky, unless you are invited to some casino on the french coast, or whatever the american equivalent is, or everyone around you is wearing them for whatever reason.

I have a few, I think polo shirts are one of those things you can make to look more smart or casual depending on what you're going for.

I think polos are the most versatile thing in my wardrobe. They'll take you anywhere from sailing to work to a summer wedding under a blazer. I have lots of them and in all colors with white and pastel pink being my go-to's. Unlike Michael, I enjoy wearing the myriad of colors and tend to stay away the more sober black, grey, and beige. Have fun with them.

I don't consider polos to be particularly formal, though they are often associated with "preppy" people who have associations of being wealthy. I wore polo shirts a lot in high school, including a pink Lacoste polo that I loved. I don't wear them as much now, but I will occasionally wear a striped polo and I think I look quite good in one.

I have still this picture on my mind of a bunch of 9 year old kids, all dressed with those jackets.
All navy blue. All with those buttons. All the same.
    Nope...

When I was in high school it was considered preppy to wear polos but now days they're so common. I wear them all the time and don't consider them dressy or anything

LOL! For me it was Eton suits and white bucks every Easter. There's a photo of me around three years old wearing camel hair coat almost identical to my father's. I was kept in short pants until third grade even in winter living in Western New York no less! This was in the 60's. I never stood a chance. Preppy then, preppy now. :roflmao:

Jake and his friends wears polos to school. Jake has 14 polos in different colors, including pink and lilac. He looks cute in them (he is cute out of them, too ).
