I might go there this summer and if you live nearby or have gone there can you tell me what cool things I should go to? Thanks! We actually were going somewhere else once and got lost in Sacramento and I didn't even think about how the golden gate bridge is there! :roflmao:
I'm in Reno, so I'm a couple hours away. I've been to Sacramento many times, though mostly it's a pass-through on the way to San Francisco for me. What I can recommend seeing, however, is the Old Town district. Old Sacramento is a legitimately old Wild West-type area of the city, located near downtown on the river that’s become a tourist attraction, but it’s an interesting one at least. The Capitol building is also a sight to see and there is a museum there. The Golden Gate Bridge is in San Francisco--about 2 hours away from Sacramento. Though Sacramento has its own "golden bridge" of sorts, the Tower Bridge.
I lived there for eight months. Don't go there. There's nothing to do. Pass through, don't stop for one second, and mosey over to San Francisco where the Golden Gate bridge, Castro, and all of that is.
It totally depends on what you're after. Sacramento isn't huge, but it's got a great little cultural scene in midtown, artwalks and various activities both in the city and in the burbs, Folsom Lake which is a lovely lake with boating and swimming (about 40 mins from downtown Sacramento) and Lake Tahoe and Reno within a couple hours' drive. There are also some great museums and art galleries. There's certainly more to do in San Francisco... but if you're staying in hotels, it's about 3 or 4 times the price.
I like Sacramento quite a bit. Yes, SF has tons more going on but traffic is terrible and it is expensive. I highly recommend the train museum in Old Town Sac. Very cool. There is a Scandia amusement park on the other side of town that's a blast with go carts, arcade, mini golf, etc. Also for the dates you are going to be there check what is scheduled at the Arco Arena and Sacramento Fairgrounds.
On top of this, it does has a small replica of the Golden Gate Bridge, which only pedestrians and cyclists can use, and which is located on the bike trail near the river and the state college there. It does not qualify as one of the major sights, fwiw!
