Do you know what I mean? People saying "that's so gay" to describe something. I assume they mean it in the context of "that's so stupid".

I admit that I sometimes catch myself saying it (although it's rare). Like when I'm playing videogames with my friends and something unlucky happens to me in the game, I'll sometimes say "That's so gay". But I usually put other adjectives in its place because I hate saying that. My friends do the same thing sometimes, even though I don't think they are implying that gay people are inferior or that they're homophobic. I usually witness people my own age (who are usually the most tolerant of LGBT people) say that phrase the most.

Does it bother you and how often do you hear other people say that phrase?

I never got it. They mean 'that is so weak'.

Something gay used to mean something happy. It got bastardized thanks to homophobia.

I'd rather be gay than right, anyday...

Strangely, I hear this in my school a lot less than I used to even last year. I don't know if less people are using it, or I just live in a more progressive area than most.

Yeah, it bothers me. My dad used to use it just to piss me off, and I don't think gay should ever be an insult.

It tells me a lot about the person using it. It bothers me too, because every time someone uses that word in that context the concept of gayness is more associated with negativity. Or it becomes a joke.

But I'm picky about words anyway, so...

You know I was thinking about this the other day.
Most of my non-LGBT friends say it and then immediately apologize and look guilty. So I always felt bad if I said it too.

Then one day I was playing video games with 4 other dudes, two of which are engaged to other and I had grown up with. One of the guys dies and he just blurts out "that is so fucking gay". I look at my friends and they had no reaction at all. It was only after that I learned everyone there was gay or bi.

So I guess I'm trying to say that I actually know more gay people who say it than I do straight. It doesn't bother me all that much any longer either.

Idk I kinda equate it to how some PoC will call each other certain phrases, but god forbid if anyone outside that community use it.

To me it seems very juvenile--it doesn't bother me, however.

There has to be a hundred threads on this by now. A surprisingly high percentage take the reclaimed words are cool and language is evolving all the time view.

However it will take more than that to convince me that repeatedly associating a word and a concept doesn't create a link, and in this case it's not a very positive or healthy one.

Well with my friends we got irritated at it, so we only use it to describe things that are literally GAY  Also we have started using "that's so straight" instead of "that's so gay" when referring to negative things

Gay used to/can mean ''happy and full of life'' so I guess if they're talking about something in that sense then they're saying nothing bad and nothing about sexuality.

I've never used it as a synonym for bad or lame. My roommate once said his friends who didn't want to hang out with him were "being really gay," and I just said back "oh really?" in a flirtatious tone. I think he realized what he said.

I've used it to describe a gay pride wristband and this website (is it a lie?).

I hear it a lot in a, people using gay as a derogatory term, and the same people often use faggot but without realise how offensive they're being. I guess its just ignorance.

Huh, that's the opposite of my school. I've noticed that people are saying stuff like "that's so gay" or using "You're gay" as an insult a whole lot more than they used to. Mostly the new first years. But my school is in a very, very conservative area in a pretty conservative country so it's no surprise tbh.

It kind of annoys me. Even if some people mean well and don't mean any harm, the other half of the people who say it use it as a negative connotation to insult someone like if something isn't 'cool enough' or if they literally think the person is gay. Sort of like how you see in some movies where there's this group of guys and one of them says to one of them, "OMG like are you gay or something? Like bruh, that's SO gay.." They use that term so loosely.

    That's just my thoughts.

I don't like it. It doesn't make sense. And there are better words you could use.

    That's funny.

It doesn't bother me at all because there are plenty of words with multiple meanings, and I consider the word "gay" to be one of those that can refer to happiness, homosexuality, or something that is frowned upon as lame or unfair.

I don't get bothered by it. I have other things to worry about than what other people are saying.

I say something is "so gay" if its actually something to do with same sex relationships or maybe a gay stereotype that actually applies to me or my friend who I know will take it as a joke haha. I'm pretty literal.
