My family is Latin American. What most people don't know is that Latin American people can be very intellectual. At least my family and a local group.

Germans don't drink beer all the time and run around in lederhosen.

When many British people ask "You alright?" they're really saying "Hello". Little people actually care if they're alright or not.

Do people assume they aren't? I'm Latin American as well (Mexican). I guess there are some stereotypes around here that people of Mexican descent are going to be poor and uneducated, but pretty unfortunate that people assume Hispanics aren't going to be intellectual.

Most people apply the lazy Mexican stereotype to Latin American people. Apparently other Latin American countries apply that stereotype to Mexicans as well. Do Mexicans apply the lazy Mexican stereotype to anyone?

Because someone has already mentioned Britain as a whole, I'll mention my city instead. This is actually true for a lot of people from Liverpool, though this Scouse accent is shit.

Hm well, as I am from a small country somewhere in Europe better question will be "what is something people know about your country/culture" -.
Personally, I don't get offended at all, like 0% when someone says they know nothing about my culture, yet what often irritates me is when people assume they know something.

One recent case for example, also related to LGBT:

Friday I was talking to a friend how more women are lesbians then men are gay. So, this guy knows a girl from France to which he had shared my opinion and her answer has been that there aren't really many lesbians but girls just tell me they are.

In other words...the way I "translate" her response:

"See...you're dumb/simple guy with muscles from eastern europe who goes around randomly annoying girls and they reject you by lying to you that they're lesbians while they aren't" - In reality of course the amount of girls I've asked out in my life is exactly: 0.

^ My point about stereotypes and sorry this got longer than planned .

  9. Parents are from India, and not all Indian women are forced to get arranged marriages (at least for me). I live in America, and not all Americans are overweight, crude, and loud.

Both sides of my family are from Scotland. Though not every Scot has a sword next to their bed... (I do!) but they should!

Women in Quebec are pretty much the bosses. Really, guys are pretty shy here and they will let their wife decide for pretty much everything. Sure, this doesn't apply to every guy, but it seems to be pretty prevalent here.

Apart from that, there's actually a war between two cities in Quebec about who invented Poutine. It's between Drummondville and Victoriaville, I think. DON'T. MENTION. IT

Oh, and don't tell Quebecers that we're Canadians. That's a debate you DON'T want to get into. Though, I'd assume a lot of people know that by now.

In England we don't talk to strangers we pass on the street; it would be odd to talk to someone or even make eye contact with them (prolonged eye contact is a huge no). You could even say it would make them uncomfortable. We are very private people.

When you have finished eating, always put your knife and fork together. Never put your elbows on the table and the fork is held in the left hand, the knife in the right. Hot drinks aren't for the dinner table, either! Any other time is okay though and they are best served with a biscuit, preferably plain.

We never tell someone if we're not interested in what they're saying. Always say 'yeah' 'right' 'maybe' 'it's up to you' and so on. Oh, and if you bump into someone in public you must always say sorry - even if it was the other person's fault. Apologising is definitely an English thing!

When waiting to pay, get on a bus, use a cash machine... always queue. Pushing in is bound to get a few disapproving tuts!

I love this. I went to a french immersion school and my teachers were all from Quebec. The women are definitely in charge, they were all feisty ladies!

I don't really have a particular culture that I identify with, since Canadians are so diverse. My parents have german and french backgrounds, but it doesn't really have an effect on my life besides a few holiday traditions such as making apfel strudel and tortiere.

I have a friend who gets annoyed because everyone automatically assumes she is African because she is black, when she's actually Jamaican. Then once people find out she is Jamaican, they ask her if she smokes weed.

Always better to never assume - it's okay to be curious, but there's always a way to ask someone about their culture respectfully.

Are you trying to say that there are people who think, even if half-jokingly, that this is the case?

    LOL.

I'm a mutt, so...... there's that. I'd say that listing things that people don't know about mutts would be impossible. I don't think that a computer could count that high.

But, I'd say one thing people don't know about mutts is that we can be very violent and aggressive.

I'm West African, sierra leonean to be exact, by heritage, and most people don't much about my country, except that it's poor, and there was a war there in 90's. I guess something most people don't know is that we have this wierd secret societies, as part of our culture, one for men and one for women, that do some wierd rituals, and ceremonies, and have their own secret code language, but none knows much about them, since there well, secret societies. I have some family that used to be apart of them. So that's something cool, i guess.

Also, our languages don't have "clicks" in them. That's just a few languages in southern africa, goodness!
