I'm thinking about moving to Australia for a year to work. I don't know where exactly, it would depend on where I got a job, but I'd be looking for something in one of the bigger cities.

For anyone who currently lives or has lived in Australia, what is the stance on homosexuality? Are certain cities more gay friendly than others or are they all kind of similar in this respect?

Generally, everyone's supportive in Australia, however there are some unfortunate exceptions (one of which being our ex-PM).

I've lived in Victoria for most of my life, and Melbourne is pretty gay-friendly (I think there are a few bars around town) but also, as a city to live in, it's very good, and our rail and tram system is very easy to navigate.

Sydney is supposedly a gay Mecca I've heard from a few people - very LGBT friendly (ironically actually being gay in real Mecca will actually get you killed, so perhaps I'll need to rethink my metaphor?)

I agree, then again, being an ex-Melbournian, I would say that. If you do, visit Brunswick St, and the Red Triangle (A pool place). They do the most heavenly milkshakes: twix, after eight, hot jam donut, etc, the best damn weird flavours you could imagine.
