A while back I saw a post asking about tumblr (can’t remember what exactly, I just remember people were both for and against the LGBT community in tumblr). I guess I just wanna talk about that.. My feelings on the LGBT tumblr community are kinda split. For one, some of the resource blogs that I found on tumblr helped me define my sexuality and helped me to become more comfortable with how I identify. I was able to browse and read other peoples stories and questions, and was able to ask question myself. Other resource blogs (theres one in particular that comes to mind) don’t really answer the question asked, or only answer a part of the question. This blog I’m talking about failed to answer a few of the questions I had asked, so that makes me think how many others may not have been asked. Other blogs I’ve noticed are sorta rude towards those asking questions. Also, one of the other downsides I found through tumblr, I found it difficult to accept myself. I felt that I didn’t belong to the queer community, because I didn’t ‘look’ the part. Looking through tags such as ‘queer’ or ‘lgbt’ etc., I found that a lot of the people had a certain ‘aesthetic’ and to me, that was what ‘queer’ looked like. I was self conscious of my identity, but I did get over it. I am quite glad that I found EC, although I wish I had found it earlier or thought to look for forums and such. I love the community here Anyway, I guess I’m just wondering what opinions/experiences you may have with the LGBT+ tumblr community.
I've only actively started following LGBT blogs recently, in the past 6 months maybe, because a lot of people irl have my tumblr and I didn't feel comfortable posting LGBT things for a while but I've stopped caring now. All of the blogs I follow are FTM or trans related in some way so I can't say anything about the sexuality side but, like you, I mostly follow resourceful blogs that answer questions and stuff and honestly, everything I follow is decent and very informative and civil. Its a great community and extremely supportive. However I've browsed the 'tucute' and 'truscum' tags and dear god people are just butting heads and there are threats and insults left right and centre. I get what you mean about there being an 'aesthetic', I see that within the trans community. If you're cis-passing pre-T then on some tumblr blogs you're thought to be more valid than others so that can be harmful. I think it's just a case of following the right blogs and knowing when to stop scrolling through tags. Tumblr can be great or it can be damaging. Just depends on how you use it.
This. Also, I try not to associate with tumblr, I hear it's all just SJW's, black people who think they can't be racist, and completely made up sexualities and genders. In other words, a cesspool of the far,faR,fAR,FAR,FAR left. I have an account but I don't use it, I just lurk it, like I said earlier
I totally agree with you. I find that Tumblr can be "clique-y" in a lot of ways, and it can really suck for people who are already used to feeling like they're on the outside in their waking lives. The blogs I've seen tend to post only particular kinds of LGBT people and LGBT couples. It's kind of bizarre to me that some blogs set a precedent for what kind of people can get visibility and what kind of people can't. I just joined EC and I'm really grateful that it's such an inclusive space!
On Tumblr I just kinda chill in my fandom space. I don't like to drift into social issues or anything on there unless its something that strikes me as needing attention. Some blogs have opened my eyes a bit on gender and sexuality, and it's kinda thanks to an artist I follow that I had agender as something to go on for my gender identity. So...*awkward thumbs up* That's about all I can say on the matter.
I've no interest in Tumblr. As has been said, it's so cliquey and I find a lot of people just post on there to get pity.
I use to be apart of tumblr but the SJW and TERFs and Truscum and other things just ruined it for me.
I just go on there for art blogs and manga scanlation blogs. I do follow some goth blogs and trans blogs but that's just about it for me. I'm trying my best to stay away from the cliques.
I agree with this, I've always just sorta stayed in my fandoms, but since coming to terms I've tried branching out a bit to see what else was out there. I've been taking a recent break from tumblr (mostly due to exams) but also partly because of these social issues. That being said, I really only follow maybe 2 or 3 LGBT blogs, all of which I do like.
As a general rule tumblr is very hateful and unwelcoming. I used to use it occasionally for fandom stuff and porn, but I can't even browse yaoi without coming across someone who thinks I am the scum of the earth because I was born with a penis. As someone who tends to be very overly sensitive about these things I find the overall bigoted and cold hearted atmosphere of tumblr to be unbearable.
I follow a few blogs for Trans* health, how to blend in Stuff like that. So far they've been pretty helpful. ^-^
This is my impression of Tumblr as well: a haven for social justice warriors, extreme far-lefters, and those who parrot phrases like "die cis scum". After being in college for as long as I have, I've grown weary of the "college liberal" archetype and thus will probably steer clear of Tumblr, at least as far as the political and "social justice" posts go.
