how rare is homosexuality?

Surveys and statistic experiments usually give around 5-15% of the population. Of course, you have to remember that some people do not want to reveal their sexuality even to a poll taker, and others don't label themselves as homosexual even though they would be considered as such by some peoples' standards.

 

base on what biased poll you want to read, anywhere from 3 - 10% of the population. But then they don't have a count on the closet.

 

perhjaps we should start apolll on a polling site, LOL.... and send it in after thousands of votes, LOL.... OUR identity for those in the closet would still be ananymus

 

It's so rare that it doesn't exist.

 

It will be hard to peg down as long as socieity continues to persecute people for being gay.

 

I don't think I've met more than 5 or 6 LGBT people since as far back as I can remember.
I know there's more people out there who hide themselves, but they won't admit to themselves.
It's kinda sad, but I guess that's life.

Likely you know or have met a lot more gay people. It is just that you did not know they were gay.

Based on my personal empirical findings I would say the above state 10% is correct. Of course I am speaking of population on a large scale. The smaller the group the greater the deviation. First because of normal variation in traits, and second people tend to migrate to better environments. So you will see a higher percentage in San Francisco than you will see in Birmingham, Alabama.

 

I agree with starfish that it really depends on the place where you look. Gay guys are all over CA and NY but I would guess they're much much rarer in the south and midwest due to the overbearing homophobia. (at least that's what i've heard).

 

Based on the office I work in, that sounds about right. We've just just over 100 guys and including me, I know of 5 gays - of course, there may well be more who are in the closet (anyone else in the office wouldn't know about me for example)

 

You will NEVER escape us gays

We are everywere! Its just sometimes we lurk, and sometimes we dont. Someplace's we are drawn to, someplace's we are repelled from. But everywhere you go there will be other closeted gays for sure.

 

ItS obviously rarer than being straight but its so hard to get an accurate figure as people are not always ready to say or havent come out. But the 'official' stats say something about 5-10% of the population.

That is a good point. It seems like everyone has at least one has gay cousin.

 

i don't think its that rare, i seem them everywhere!!!
and some thing i read in which they condensed the world into only 100 people said that 11 of them would be gay.
So maybes 11%?
but none the less they aren't like horribly unseen where i am.

In my class of about 35ish people, there are 3 people I know are gay/bi, including myself. By who knows how many other people are in the closet.

 

I thought it was pretty rare in my town, but I suppose I was just being very close-minded.
There are actually a lot, apparently.
I personally only know a few, but those few know another few, who know another few, and so on.
There are a couple of people I know who are gay in some of my classes.
At the moment I'm taking mostly science classes but come May I'll be an art student.
And there seem to be quite a few openly gay people in art.
