    Hello,

    So I've always had two ways of answering multiplication sums; the grid method and the written (10*2=) method. However, I was looking at teaching resources and there was another way;

    ...10
    * 12
    -------

    I know the answer to this is 120, but how would I work out the answer using this method?

    Thank-you.

    Well, not sure if that is what you mean, but...

    First, you multiplicate each number below by the ones above. Like: 2x0 = 0, then 2x1 = 2

    Write it down like this

    10
    *12
    --------
    20

    Then do the same for the "1", but jump a slot below the "0" of 20.

    Like

    10
    *12
    -------
    20
    10-

    Then, you sum up the results of each column. Empty slots are equal to 0.
    So: 0+1=1, 2+0=2, 0+0=0

    10
    *12
    -------
    20
    10-
    ----------
    120

    We use a decimal system, so multiplication is really just a single left shift.

    I was taught that method, although we'd put a zero in where the hyphen is shown. For each place from left to right in the bottom number, you add an extra zero in the sum part. This is more clear if you look at examples showing more than 2-digit numbers.
