Sorry for making so many threads lately but I've been wondering about what you guys think about this. What would you do if somebody told you they thought the Earth was flat and genuinely tried to explain it to you? I'd probably make my eyes really big and awkwardly stare at them for ten seconds.

    I would just say:

Think of calculus and "taking the area under a curve;" it's usually not flat, but at any given point you can essentially be at a flat point in a curve, a point that may appear flat, depending how "wide" your rectangles are. A flat-appearing point on this planet does not preclude it from not being flat.

Actually, I would just say: yeah, I know it's flat, it's just dem damn scientists that make stuff up; I heard they are holding the cure for cancer at Fort Knox.

Sounds like a good story, what's the name of the book?

If I knew the science of it, I'd probably explain it, but I don't.

Smile, nod, walk away without a word.
Or tell them that you do not even believe the Earth is real anyway. Their turn to be really confused.

I'd just stand there and hear them out. Needless to say, I'm pretty convinced that the Earth is spherical.

I'd probably listen to them and hear what they have to say. If they were trying to explain that our perception of the Earth is flat (since we don't really nice we're travelling around on a big, round object anyway) then I'd be more inclined to agree with them. If they were trying to explain to me that the Earth is physically round and they refused to accept otherwise, I'd be more inclined to humor them by nodding and agreeing in the right places and leave it at that. No sense me wasting energy over it.

I would suggest that we go on an epic quest to the end of the world and see what happens if we look over the edge! Maybe the earth is actually on the back of four giant elephants standing on the back of a giant space turtle... that would be so cool! :eusa_ange

I'd get really angry and force myself to walk away. Things like that drive me out of my mind because you can't engage and you end up in circular arguments. Which is ironic, I suppose.

Tell them my thoughts about Axxon N...

Seriously, though, I would just start talking about something surreal and bizarre as if it were real and see if they believed me.

This is way beneath my consideration. That's a person who is epistemically so far out of line that a conversation is not possible. They can hold that belief alone and in darkness.

    So violent.

I would hear them out. I would even possibly consider it. Then I would ask them if I can have whatever they're on.

I would show them a globe and if that didn't do anything at all, I'd give up and just leave.

    1) Stare. Really hard.
    2) Ask them to identify their purpose for doing so, sources of information, and which drugs they're taking or which rock they live under
    3) Ask for their education background, so I know where to vent my horror and frustration
    4) Pick apart their argument one by minuscule one, outline every single reason why their arguments are invalid, provide evidence of a round earth.
    5) Look on in pity as they attempt to figure out the truth.

I'd send them to space, but that's honestly a real waste of resources.

There's actually a philosophic/psychologic theory that basically says that reality is all in the individual's mind. I don't know or remember much about it (a prof mentioned it first year in uni, in like, 2007) but what it boiled down to was that everything is in your own mind. So none of you 'exist' but are rather extensions of myself. So, that could work! Or backfire, depending on your prespective.

I would like to take them to a computer, open photoshop, draw a circle, then zoom in really really really tiny. Be like, "look, a straight line, oh wait!" zoom out and show them the circle. Maybe open a few physics/art websites just to further the point.
