Did they block, like, all vBulletin-type forums or just this one?

Am I the only one who wet to a school system that actively blocked pretty much anything "fun" on the internet? If it wasn't educational in the strictest sense it was blocked.

Yeah my old school blocked a ton of things. My school now blocks... Wait for it... Google image searches.

Proxies are good for avoiding the system, there are a ton around and schools can't get to all of them.

the thing my school uses is able to be bypassed by using the program mentioned in the video on this website:http://www.tinkernut.com/archives/129

using that program + firefox, I can access any site I want :icon_bigg:icon_bigg:icon_bigg

proxys can work but schools watch for them so that they can block new ones the program I mentioned, can't be blocked :slight_smile::slight_smile:

I have never heard of doing that, but the servers my school uses controls it by the IP address. a proxy only changes the url of the site, the program I mentioned changes the IP address of the computer.

No, not if there's an transparent filter on the network. Most likely some sort of proxy with ACLs is in place.

Public proxies are not advisable as stated above, people can sniff the data for passwords and such.

If you really want to get creative, setup you own proxy on your home computer, open it on a non-proxy port, and use it to browse sites that are blocked. It may be a bit slower depending on your connection, but it should work.

Alternatively, there used to be anonymisers - like a web-based proxy. I don't know if they're out there anymore.

Oh, and a side thought - if they're filtering by destination domain or a regex on the url, try accessing empty closets via its IP address: http://66.115.186.108/forum

One more thing, if it's a computer you use, see if u can modify the hosts file:

    ec 66.115.186.108

so if you went to http://ec/forum
    it'd bring you here.

I can see how that would work, but once the browser goes to the http://66.115.186.108/forum address, it then changes the url back to normal which is what servers block. so that would backfire

plus when I tried clicking on the http://ec/forum link I got a 'Cannot find sever' message

^^ the ec/forums would only work if ec was set in the default domain of the network, or in the hosts file.

Edit your hosts file, insert the entry I named above, flush the dns, and then try. It should work.

That's why my work computer uses one of my servers at home for DNS. I can spoof whatevs I want.

Everyone should run an in-house DNS server. Makes things sooo much easier.

ok I just tried something else. when I click the first link you put, it takes me to the normal site with the normal url but if I Copy/Paste the IP address you provided into the address bar it will work without changing it back to normal.

I have tried to do something like that before at school and it had it blocked still.

I think that school severs are more strict b/c they expect kids to try to get around them more than they would at an office.

My school blocked the little things.
At first it seemed only to be porn.

    then MINICLIP WAS GONE!
    Michael could not stand this.
    Michael found a way!
    Michael used proxy sites!

    the school banned them!
and itroduced hourly passwords for the internet

michael found a way around this
log onto the the heads computer!
    FIND HIS SUPER PASSWORD!

the school was saved...for a week.

    Then michael got pissed.

Michael ran firefox from removable HDD and changed his ip (not to different to the video above)
    MICHAEL WON!

then michael got cocky and uploaded a virus on the school intranet.
I have to say watching the pop-ups simultaneously appear around the room was funny.

But michael got blocked from comptuers all together.
