Hi guys. Some of you have probably never even heard of this place, but I'm here to talk about Vermont. Vermont was once its own country (the Vermont Republic) from 1777-1791, until it became part of the USA. Now, over 200 years later, at least 13% of Vermonters are supportive of secession once more, I being one of them. So, do you think Vermont should seceed? Do you think it has the right to seceed? Let me know.

Texas could kick your Vermont back to the Maple Age.

I would 100% support an independent Vermont. It is the right of the people to determine whether or not they want independence in any situation imo. Generally I find that younger people support more autonomy since we are generally more optimistic and strive for change in politics.

I actually support my own region gaining independence to be honest, or at least becoming a nation. Anything is possible, really.

We have no beef with you sir. Texans never caused us any problems. New York & Massachusetts on the otherhand...

Every state has the right to secede from the Union. But the question is, is it mutually economically beneficial for both parties (US & State) and do they have the resources to thrive. I believe that is what Texas is looking at now. But in any case, Texas did it first!

No, the country fought so hard to prevent secession. The union must be intact... sorry but I don't think there's any good reason for Vermont to succeed other than pride.

And no, states don't have the right to succeed. There really is no constitutional process for succession as far as I know.

    Of course I'm for it.

I'm for all secession movements because I believe every nation should be able to govern themselves. I'm all for Scotland, Catalonia, Wales, Vermont, Texas and of course Quebec!

Just do so peacefully with the rest of the population behind you

This. Anyone who wants one of the states to succeed clearly doesn't understand our country's history.

Still, I'd be willing to listen to whoever wanted to kick Florida off... >_>

I don't care either way. Besides if you tried, you would just get a US President not recognizing a secession and intervening all over again.

I live in Montreal, in Canada, just north of Vermont. We get their TV signals here very clearly, and in a way, I have watched Bernie Sanders' career unfold over the years.

Secession is a touchy topic here in Quebec and has been for years. It certainly was the issue that started the US civil war. No state has an inherent right to secede, and neither does any province here in Canada. To my mind, in this increasingly connected world on a global scale, it makes no sense to go back to being an independent country.

In any case, Vermont pretty much does what it wants anyway, it is certainly one of the most progressive states in the Union, but it also benefits in many significant ways from its membership in the federation and its use of the US currency.

My hope is that, sometime in the future, the very relevance of separate countries will diminish. I know this is a radical idea, but with trade agreements and financial flows between nations, the internet, and an increasing movement away from war to solve conflicts (yeah, despite all the bad news out there, war is in fact a happily endangered activity), what will we be needing countries for anyway?

Vermont couldn't secede even if 100% of the population wanted to. It's a pointless discussion.

Better yet, why don't we saw off Michigan and turn ourselves over to the Canadians? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Actualy, didn't Texas not become its own country until the early 1800's? I'm pretty sure Vermont did it first.

I'm not from Vermont, but it's by far my favorite state. Also, we share a border with it! If I ever go to the states, I'd be sure to check it out since it supposedly looks like Quebec

(Also, lots of Quebecer immigrated in Vermont during the industrialisation era, so yeah)

No, I do not think it should secede, nor do I think it even has the right to secede. The Constitution would have to change in order for that to happen. That said, I don't think Vermont is worth fighting a civil war over...

If a majority of the people of a state or province wish to secede, then the national government has no business telling them that they can't. Especially here in the US, we should be more sympathetic toward separatist causes, since only about a third of the colonists (IIRC) supported our revolution, and we had no right to secede.

You see what's gonna happen there is if Vermont secedes then another states gonna wanna do it and then it's going to become a new fad to secede and then eventually the US is just gonna fall apart.

Actually, states do not have the right to secede from the union. The Supreme Court ruled in 1869 in Texas V. White that once a state joins the union, it is a permanent and inseparable covenant.
