Well at my GSA, we just sit around a big table and have check-ins. It's very lax--we go around, asking everyone how their week was, and if everything at home is okay. Everyone gets to share something if they want to. Then, if everyone is fine, we just talk about whatever is on our minds, from GLBT issues to anything under the sun.
Basically what seanathon said. Sometimes our advisor will cajole us into doing a fundraiser of something, but we usually just talk. Sometimes we have discussions, but usually not. It's just a place to chill.
At our Mesmac meetings, we do loads of stuff. One time we had a big discussion on why homophobia exists, but we've also had all sorts of other stuff, like A history of drag, with one of our resident queens putting on his makeup and everything from scratch, we had Call My Sexual Bluff, like the panel show but with sexual meanings behind the terms, we've also had a pyjama party movie night where we got pizza and watched The Devil Wears Prada... Oh, and there was one occasion where we went to the local gay pub because they were hosting the Supergay Valentines Quiz. We came 7th out of 15. Eeee, Mesmac is so much fun ahaha So really, whatever we feel like doing! It's great =D
Our GSA plans events to spread awareness and tolerance. we also held a confrence for other GSA's to come to and hear about LGBT stuffles. we had a concert at our school by the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. We're kind of surprisingly active lol.
the more i hear abotu these meeting the more i wish i knew of something similar in my city they sound so nice a relaxing no pretense or having to pretend to be someone your not
My LGBT group, starts off with check-ins, and then we'll usually talk about some of the events that we are planning, such as workshops, guest speakers and other things that help to raise awareness. Have you tried a Google search for your area? Maybe you could contact some of the LGBT youth groups in the West Midlands, and maybe they could provide you with some leads?
GSA, refers to, Gay-Straight Alliance. A lot of high schools and colleges/universities have them, where LGBT youths and their supporters can gather and talk about LGBT stuff. A lot of GSA are also there to provide a safe space for LGBT youths, and a place where people can hang out and socialize. I am not sure what they would be called in the UK, though.
ah right, probably called the same thing, never existed when i was at school unfortunatly, must go google it, see if we have them here
GSA is more of an American term, jcoventry1, we tend to call them just whatever. Gay youth groups or the like. Adam, this would be a good place to start: http://www.switchboardwm.org.uk/default.asp?id=12&sC=page3 Ring them and ask about gay groups in your city. There's always someone who knows of something local, and considering you live in a city unlike me, and I've still got a group to go to, I'm sure you will =]
so its basically just an LGBT youth group. right i think i go it now, lol they still wasnt around when i was at school
