Well, I typically go from one anti-virus free trial to another and I recently installed CA anti-virus suite and among the features was a parental control thing.

Upon loading the internet most sites worked fine. Some of the more adult places I visit featured a warning page and prompted a password (which I didn't mind).

Later, upon visiting Empty closets I got a similar prompt. They claimed EC was a dating site...

I feel sorry for the confused young kids who could really use the help EC can offer but can't because their parents installed this CA bullshit on their computer. I still can't get over that the only excuse they could come up with to block this site was to call it a "dating site."

These things work on word and phrase filters - about as subtle as a steamroller. When I was about thirteen I can safely say that the only thing keeping me from killing myself was a support site named Teen Moods, and my Dad installed some software which blocked access to the site, because it contained the words "teen" and "chat" in its description. It took me weeks to sabotage the damn thing well enough that I could get back to my only real human contact.

If parents wish to restrict what their kids use on the internet, they should do so via this new-fangled "communication" stuff, not brute force.

I agree. I don't think I'd ever put restrictions on the computer simply because I don't think at the age of 13+ they should be censored. Porn is deadly to a computer if you don't have good anti-virus/spyware/malware/crapwarestuff. It isn't going to hurt a child. Even then, I'd never want to block a site like EC because of it too.
