Ok, i was not aware of this until recently as I did not watch the oscars here in Singapore. (it was on at 9am, during school time), but this gives you a rough idea of censorship here. Btw, a similar incident regarding Freeheld where a speech regarding gay rights was censored happened as well in 2008. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-flumenbaum/how-beijing-butchered-sea_b_170955.html
One, that's not cool. Two, I feel sorry that they had to miss out on an incredibly moving couple of speeches.
Singapore's not communist. They don't censor it like that here, the censorship laws are just plain stupid (naturally EC's blocked, so I have to use a proxy). Borat was banned, because it MAKES JEWS LOOK FUNNY. Don't mess with Zohan was rarely advertised due to the lead character being Jewish Coke isn't advertised alot, nor is Marks and Spencers (both have a Jewish history). Ur So Gay by Katy Perry was never played on the radio. The list goes on.
I think it is petty and small minded to censor these topics. These people in government must be scared shitless of those different from them- I pity them. Not so long ago my country also censored books/movies/the media that dealt with interracial relationships, homosexuality or criticism against apartheid. Thank goodness I didn't had to experience it. Ignorance is definitely not bliss.
this is all pretty standard asian countrys have always been pretty censored i remember the other year china was on the news all the time over it anything negative was stopped.
I thought China was ok with same sex marriage.. But then again they control what people can and cannot search on the internet
