Yay happy earth day! I just got back from Starbucks after I had my free coffee for bringing my own cup. http://www.starbucks.ca/en-ca/_Social+Responsibility/Earth+Day.htm How getting in my car, and driving to Starbucks saves the environment over drinking coffee at home I don't know, but meh. I did take the bus earlier.
I've never seen anybody mention it here before. You'd think they would considering the UK is on Earth, but us Brits have to do everything weirdly so we must have decided we're not a part of earth today.
Well UK doesn't quite consider itself part of Europe, so it wouldn't surprise me if you didn't consider yourself part of Earth either.
Earth Day! Today is Earth Day and on the news they were showing what people are doing to save the planet. I changed most of my light bulbs to compact florescent bulbs, use cloth recyclable bags when I go food shopping and use an electric strip for my laptop and cell phone charger then turn it off when I am not using in. What are you guys doing?
My family has just started switching over to CFLs. They had about 50% of the bulbs switched over and were gradually changing them as they burnt out. So today I went and switched the rest out. It may seem wasteful to replace perfectly useable lightbulbs but they just electricity hogs and it seemed more wasteful to leave them in. I only ended up replacing seven bulbs but even that is supposed to save roughly $300 (according to GE) over the life of the bulbs although it is probably closer to $188 with the local price of electricity. (savings were based on an average use of 4 hours per day) Other than that I don't work today so I'm not really planning to go anywhere. Most of the lights are off except in the basement where my dad is so he can see. Otherwise the sun lights up most of the rooms in the house just fine until sunset. Since I have the day off I might go for a bike ride. It's been nice out these past few days and the snow has melted and it is for the most part dry out.
i love earth day ^_^ i was going to go hug a tree today but seeing as it is raining it can wait haha. but seriously. we only have one earth we need to take care of it ^_^
We need to make sure to do the whole "One minute off of electricity" thing. Though after putting some thought into it, it dawned on me that it takes more power to turn something on that to keep it running...so the moment people turn their lights back on, the jolt used to start it is...only a small amount less than what we would have used keeping things running during that minute. Which means, we need a lot of people to cooperate to make this saving count as a decent amount! ^^
A friend and I went down to the beach and picked up garbage. There was only two of us, and one bag so we didn't get a ton, but we are trying to get a whole bunch of people to come again with us this weekend. Happy earth day!
