August 9 Presidential Gay Debate Expanded, Gravel Invited

(Los Angeles, California) LOGO television announced Friday that it has expanded next month's landmark debate by the Democratic presidential candidates to 90 minutes, and that Sen. Mike Gravel has been invited to take part.

Gravel was the only candidate not originally asked to the debate, to take place in Los Angeles on August 9 because he did not meet a campaign fundraising threshold set by LOGO and the Human Rights Campaign which is co-producing the debate.

Gravel expressed anger at not being invited. In a positing attributed to him on the political Huffington Post Gravel said, "To say that I'm shocked is an understatement. I can confidently say, of all presidential candidates, I've been the most outspoken advocate for gay rights."

I'm not certain if that is entirely true. Kucinich also says we should have our marriages legally recognized and opposes Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT).

Gravel has long supported same-sex marriage and ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

Thought, all presidential candidates in the past were too negative about gay rights:dry:
    Hopefully, they ARE outspoken.

I just hope it doesn't come back to haunt the Democrats.

While I think it's cool, their quotes may be taken out of context and used against the Democratic candidates by the radical right, to play on the homophobic nature of many Americans. While chances are, many of these people would have voted Republican anyway, I wonder what the gain is, besides for the primaries. Again, I like to see this happening, and think it's cool, but... I hope the Democratic candidates are not being too shortsighted. Sure, only one of them will win the Democratic primaries, and the vote of the gay community is important in that regard. It's nice to know who to support as our best option for obtaining equality, especially with regard to marriage. But after the primaries, wouldn't most members of the gay or gay-friendly community have voted Democratic, anyway? Now, we're left with a gay-friendly candidate on the Democratic side, but at what cost?

America is generally homophobic. A presidential candidate known to have voiced support for gay rights and gay marriage may actually lose more votes than they will gain. Because, again, after the primaries, most gay guys would vote Democratic anyway. But some homophobes may have voted Democratic before, too. Now, which way will they lean? Were the votes gained worth the votes lost? Only time will tell, I suppose.

I'm happy to see the debate taking place to hear the issues. Let's just hope it is as successful as it can be.
