I haven't posted this in awhile, so time to dust it off.

This is the Tom Robinson Band performing "Glad to Be Gay".

Tom had some modest success with his first single in the UK "2-4-6-8 Motorway", but this song (which was released as a single along with "Don't Take No for an Answer" was a real stunner. Tom was saying that he was gay. Not in a coy, fun, friendly way. But in a pointed, angry manner. Here are the lyrics to the single version (a bit different from what he sings here).

The British Police are the best in the world
I don't believe one of these stories I've heard
'Bout them raiding our pubs for no reason at all
Lining the customers up by the wall
Picking out people and knocking them down
Resisting arrest as they're kicked on the ground
Searching their houses and calling them queer
I don't believe that sort of thing happens here

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

Pictures of naked young women are fun
In Titbits and Playboy, page three of The Sun
There's no nudes in Gay News, our one magazine
But they still find excuses to call it obscene
Read how disgusting we are in the press
The News of The World, and the Sunday Express
Molesters of children, corruptors of youth
It's there in the paper, it must be the truth

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

Don't try to kid us, but if you're discreet
You're perfectly safe as you walk down the street
You don't have to mince or make bitchy remarks
To get beaten unconscious and left in the dark
I had a friend who was gentle and short
Got lonely one evening and went for a walk
Queerbashers caught him and kicked in his teeth
He was only hospitalized for a week

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

So sit back and watch as they close all our clubs
Arrest us for meeting and raid all our pubs
Make sure your boyfriend's at least 21
So only your friends and your brothers get done
Lie to your workmates, lie to your folks
Put down the queens and tell anti-queer jokes
Gay Lib's ridiculous, join their laughter
'The buggers are legal now, what more are they after?'

Sing if you're glad to be gay
Sing if you're happy that way

The thing to keep in mind here is that Tom isn't singing about past history. This is now. His friend really did have his teeth kicked in just for being gay. The British police really DID do all these things. And Tom knew that by releasing this song, he was effectively ending his career as a pop singer. (More or less. He managed another modest hit with a lame remake of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number".) And yet Tom felt the song needed to be done.

Extra bravery points to his band. They're straight, and they had to get up on stage and sing "Sing if you're glad to be gay"...in the late 70s. And not in a cutesy-fun, flavor-of-the-month, Katy Perry sort of way. In a "I could get my ass kicked for singing this" sort of way. Which is why the guitarist looks so nervous, I think.

Adam et Yves (Zazie)
Comme ils disent (Charles Aznavour)
3 ème Sexe (Indochine)

There is sevral other songs of Indochine mentionning it, and the clip of Marylin starts with a kiss between Nicolas Sirkis and a guy.

Lady Gaga's Poker Face is actually about hiding your true sexuality. Though it doesn't blatantly say anything gay, the meaning of the lyrics is about "bluffing" about your sexuality.

I'm not going to argue the anti-bisexual backlash he got, but there's a bit more to it than that.

Tom never claimed to be anything but gay. He has said that, until he met his wife-to-be, he'd never found a woman attractive. Then, I'll be damned - he met a woman, fell in love, and apparently, he was actually bisexual. Kudos to him for not fighting it, and doing as his heart said. But remember - this was about twenty or so years ago. Before twitter, before myspace, before the internet. Tom couldn't suddenly tell all his fans (and the world) about his thoughts on the matter. All the gay community saw was this "gay and proud of it" man had married a woman, and they thought (wrongly) that he had perhaps felt he'd "outgrown" his homosexuality, and felt that the gay community had "lost" its first really outspoken member. This was on top of the anti-bi sentiments, so it was quite a little to-do.

Well, lots of Jay Brannan's songs are gay-related. A few of my favorites:

The Ark's song Father Of A Son is about gay people's right to adopt children. Ola Salo, who wrote it, got an award for it.

Might Tell You Tonight by the Scissor Sisters. It's a love song Jake Shears wrote for his bf. I love that song. If I get married, I want to have that song playing.

Has this actually been said by her though? Because I've always thought of being gay when hearing the song and how you have to hide your sexuailty when you like guys and they don't even know, a "poker face" of sorts. I thought that was just me conecting the song to my own personal life though I wasn't aware it was written for that. It in a way makes the song less special to me now. I have to look this up now.
