Ok, so I'm finalizing my college schedule for next semester and having an opening to where I can add a class. I'm deciding between either German or Italian. I've never taken a German class. I've taken Italian before a know some. So I guess I'm asking which one would you guys rather take? :eusa_doh:
Neither. Second language classes EAT up your time. Unless you need to take a language class for you degree, I'd avoid it. (Says the biology student who took an Italian class thinking she would have fun, but instead learned that too much homework on top of labs is a remedy for DEATHzors.)
Personally, I rather like the sound of German over Italian because I'm weird like that, but since you speak English already, why not go for Italian instead of another Germanic language (it's more diverse or something). Or maybe just flip a coin?
italian italian italian italian italian....italian. Its so musical and sexy. German is so harsh and angry. I just love the way italian flows with the words ending in open vowels, rather than the sharp closed sounds german words end in. My best friend loves german and has been trying to prove to me it can be sexy and romantic. She has failed thus far
Italian is a latin based language, which is probably more difficult for you. German is more like English in some ways.. you have to adjust to the pronunciation, but it might be easier. I understand italian and can speak a bit, and i'm fluent in german.
What are you studying? If you're learning a language for utility purposes, I'd say go with German. It's a language that is used more globally than Italian is. for example if you ever have to deal with people from the east of Europe, you have a better use to be ganed out of German (or at least that has been my experience). And if you're going into a field like engineering, or chemistry, or history, or philosophy, quite a number of important books for those fields were written in German. Of course, if you're learning it because you want to learn any new language, I'd say go with the one you like the sound of most. And German can be totally romantic and sexy. Just don't pronounce it in a nazi führer's barking accent, though
Since you speak English, German is going to be so much easier than Italian. If you already know Spanish and good at Spanish, I say try Italian. Or if you know French, try Italian. Either way these languages won't be to difficult.
German won't be much easier than Italian. Why? Well here's a rough draft of what you'll be looking at: You won't have to learn a new writing system for either. German has easier pronunciation, but... ...it makes use of noun declensions. Both have verb conjugations for person and tense. English draws from both German and Latin, so cognates will be plenty (probably more so in Italian). In my opinion, while the pronunciation of German may be easier, the grammar of Italian looks far less menacing. German makes use of the case system, which means you'll have to "conjugate" your nouns based on their use in a sentence. Just go with your gut. Which culture draws you in more? Which one is closer to your heart? Think about what you'd want to be speaking in the future. Wie geht es Ihnen? Come va? Good luck. :')
Well on one hand Italian, as stated by many, is super sexy. German is more efficient in the real world, as it is more widely spoken. I say if you have the time take Italian. If you don't need it for anything and are just doing it for fun then it is going to take up most of your free time and probably not be that much fun later on, so I'd say don't take either.
