I can't type without smilies! XD
It'd be an EC day without me. v_v
I mean, smilies brighten up a post. Who wants a day of seriousness?

Some people put fruit in bowls.
Some people put fruit in their mouths.
Some people put fruit in pies.
So are you asking everyone to not type smilies for a day? Because, well, you'd have better luck organizing all of EC to do something if it was a little more fun or meaningful. I mean, the most I can imagine is everybody in chat acting all "internets is srs business" for 10 minutes tops. But hey, I haven't tried it. Anything is possible! Look, I haven't typed any smilies at all!

I don't really see the point..
Why do we want to try to stress how serious and non-smiley we are? (And to who?)

Serious reply ahead; do not read if you expect to be amused.

I'm sorry, but I don't think these two concepts ("look how serious we can be" and "It'll be fun") can co-exist. Besides, smileys serve an important function in web communication. As you may know, the majority of communication is non-verbal. Most of what me mean comes not from what words we say, but our tone of voice and our body language. Though smileys are hardly sufficient replacements for those components, they serve the same function. For example, let's look at the simple phrase "no way".

    No way.:eusa_danc (This is fantastic!)
No way.:icon_bigg (I did not expect things this good to happen.)
No way.:icon_redf (I am embarrassed by this surprise.)
No way. (I am completely surprised.)
No way. (I am not happy with this.)
No way.:icon_sad: (This makes me really sad.)

You get the idea. A smiley allows you to convey your emotions when words and punctuation are not enough. Sure, they are frequently overused, but they are still necessary, whether we like it or not.

From a linguistics point of view, that's an incredible concept. Imagine crafting a conlang that uses emotion particles to clear up all the ambiguity of internet speech! (Besides just exclamation marks). It'd be just like that one feminist language Láadan! Gah. It seems like an amazing idea, but where to start? T_T

I guess I'd have to map out all the emotions that I usually express...

Oh, and not using smilies? It'd be an interesting social experiment, so I don't see why not.
