Would you call yourself a "stereotypical" gay?

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by AlexPatrickMorrissey, Dec 11, 2009.

  1. I wouldn't really, even though I love 80's pop and "woman" films. I'll list the things that I wouldn't consider "stereotypical".

    - I listen to mainly Alternative, Punk, and Grunge (like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, or Weezer)

    - I am not metrosexual. I sometimes skip washing my hair, which makes people tell me I look like Kurt Cobain. It's actually funny, because I do have a striking resemblance to him.

    - I don't have a lisp.

    - I usually wear black clothing. I don't dress flamboyantly.

    - I adore Horror movies. My favorites are Sleepaway Camp, Let the Right One In, and Repo! The Genetic Opera.

    - I prefer sitting back to sitting crosslegged.

    - I play a fuckload of video games.

    - I don't care for Lady GaGa, Madonna, or Britney Spears. My favorite female singer is Bjork.

I have a flamboyant flair now and then but I wouldn't even say I'm even close to the stereotype!

Not really. I have the occasional odd moment where I do something super gay, but those are rare. Sure I like to bake, clean, watch television and movies that are generally considered to be geared towards women (like The View), and I even know the lyrics to a Lady Gaga song or two. But I generally don't think of myself as a stereotypical gay man. I hardly dress flamboyantly; most of my clothes are plain and dark. I know next to nothing about Broadway musicals, although I blame that on living in the middle of nowhere. I like to look nice, but I don’t spend more than 15 minutes getting ready for something.

    Yes, actually.

    -I love Broadway musicals.
-Most of my friends are female.
    -I talk with my hands.
-I love fashion and give great fashion advice.
-I flirt with my straight guy friends (jokingly, though).
    -I like Madonna.
    -I watch Will and Grace.
-I take a certain amount of pride in my appearance.

    That's about it, I guess. :3

So not stereotypical. Most of my clothes are plain, I have, shall we say, an underdeveloped fashion sense, and my idea of a fun time is going with my friends into the desert to shoot the rifle I just bought.

When a couple of friends first found out I was gay, their response was "are you sure?" I defy stereotypes

Let's see... The stereotype about lesbians.

    Other stereotypes:
    -always short hair
    -butch
    -owns power tools
    -wants to be a man
    -wants a "cock"
    -has a masculine occupation
    -'swaggers'
    -is mean
    -wears flannel all the time
    -hates men

    Of the following, I only:
    -have short hair
-and am attracted to women (but not because I want to be a man).

    Really I am:
    -just me
-I wear jeans, tshirts, shorts, tanktops, femme tops, business attire, some dresses (whatever I feel really)
    -I'm not mean
-I don't hate men. I just don't want to see them rip off their clothes off and devour me.
-I'm going into a pretty mixed sex occupation (meaning both genders are represented in my fields)
-I drink coffee/tea just like any other woman
-I guess I don't shop a lot like many women do... but that's because I'd rather be outside enjoying nature or reading a book instead

So... overall unless you catch me talking about women, my friends joking about me being "so gay" or notice me lingering my gaze on women or some form of PDA, then you probably won't know.

Yes, very yes - just a different stereotype of a gay man. Presenting the cultured gentleman:

    - polite and tactful
    - often interested in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake
    - a love of music of many styles, parts of the world, and eras
    - drinks tea
    - plays chess

but for all these qualities it is the last one which makes it true:

    - some of the above mentioned interests are a mere expression of sexual frustration

The cultured gentleman is often depicted as the single bachelor living in a large home in the English countryside spending evenings in his study with his many books. All goes well for him until he has to take care as his young nephew and niece. Then all hell breaks loose. Unlike the stereotype I am out, and no nephew or niece is going to get me married to a woman I was good friends with but we since parted ways.

  8. I'm not really stereotypical, but... I'm still pretty obvious :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: I could list ways in which I fit or don't fit the stereotype, but I kind of hate stereotypes, so I'm not going to.

Only in a few ways. Let's see:

    1. I love musicals.
    2. My favorite singer is Madonna.
    3. Followed by Christina Aguilera.
    4. I also love Judy Garland.
    5. I also like Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, and the Scissor Sisters.
    6. My favorite movies include "Gone With The Wind," "The Wizard Of Oz," "Beauty & The Beast," "Milk," and "Brokeback Mountain."
    7. "Glee" is one of the best shows ever, in my opinion.
    8. I cry at sad movies and TV shows.
    9. I've danced around in my room on ocassion.
    10. I find guys really really sexy.

That's it for me. I dress pretty plainmost of the time, I don't lisp, I like my hair to look nice but I don't obsess, my wrists are only slightly limp, I don't mince around and say "girlfriend," and "oh no you di'in't" ever. Not once. I also like Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Meatloaf, and Elvis Presley who aren't stereotypically gay music choices. and one of my favorite movies is also "Star Wars."

    Short hair, tomboyish? Check.
I'm a grad student in a male-dominated field (Computer Science), I'm a huge metalhead, I rarely wear heels or skirts, I love video games, I don't wear make-up or nail varnish, I almost never wear jewellery, I love fitness and working out...

    I *think* I'm a bit dykey. (!)

Not really, but my music tastes range from Lady GaGa, but also to Sigur Rós to Enter Shikari to Animal Collective, and i'm listening to Dream Theatre now. I tend to be a bit, i dunno... giggly? But definitely not flamboyant. Also i tend to like touching and personal films over action film, but aside from that, . A friend of mine said "you don't act gay enough to be gay", but surely being attracted to the same gender is enough?

Not really.... of course I'm still in the closet and who knows how different things would be if I was completely out.

    (Non stereotypical)
Surfing, kinda a lifestyle more than a hobby.
    Skateboarding
Fishing (just recently getting more into it)
I wear what I like or that we currently have in our shop that I like, I guess typical surfer/skater.
I have been known to go several days without showers :icon_eek:
I am lazy and procrastinate a lot

    (Kind of stereotypical)
Going to school for architectural drafting.
    Thinks guys are hot!
Enjoys reading for the pleasure of it
    Enjoys photography
I enjoy cleaning and doing the laundry
I want to learn to cook
    I enjoy watching live plays
Can really camp it up if I want to, usually when no one is looking :smilewave
And like Just Adam said, can be extremely emotional :icon_bigg:angry::lol::icon_sad::tears:

I don't know...I think lesbian stereotypes span so many different things...it's hard to say. There's like...pornstar heteromale fantasy lesbians ..and superdyke butch lesbian...and like...powersuit intense lesbian...and like...hippy space cadet lesbian..........

    They're like barbi varieties.

I imagine that I have a bit of each stereotype in me...well...I dunno. I'm not a pornstar, but I'm a perv. I'm not superdykey but I have my "fuck ya" moments...I'm not super intense powery...but I am passionate about my career and can be intense about certain subjects, I suppose...and then again I'm sort of mellow and hippyish in general. ...but...not

    Clear, yes?

Not really since no one can really tell what I am, much to my annoyance

-I don't care what I look like when I leave the house
-Im unorganized and I hate cleaning
    -Im overly shy
-I do procrastinate quite a bit
-I only like a select few musicals
-I don't care for the majority of female singers and actors
-I despise promiscuity and open relationships of all kinds
    -I don't cry very often
-My voice isn't high pitched, its actually quite monotone
-I do not have female friends
-I don't really actually care about fashion or art
-Music is not my life and people who say music is their life irritate me, like there isn't more important things in the world
    -I enjoy solitude
-I don't care what anyone thinks
-And I'm not perky and optimistic
Ill leave it there but theres plenty more

As for stereotypes I do fit in
-By instinct I say ew during a sex scene between a man and a woman in movies
    -I'm patient and understanding
    -I do like bright colors
    -I speak correct English
    -I hate sports
-I throw like a girl (You know what I mean)
-I do speak with my hands
-I've never been kicked in the crotch by a girl (I think this counts)
    -I love comedy-romance movies
    -And well I love guys
Thats all I can think of right now

Rawwrrrr, RaeofLite, I absolutely hate the "ALL LESBIANS HATE MEN" stereotype. >:| Or the "you're just a lesbian because you couldn't get a boyfriend" one. No! Guys are cool and I love hanging out with them! I just don't particularly want to date them. Psh, it's about lady-love, not man-hate!

I don't know which stereotype I hit though. I seem to hit a couple kinda!

    - I so do not like wearing dresses or skirts and generally feel awkward as hell wearing one in public.
    - I hate carrying purses.
    - I have short hair and like it better that way. (Even though I kind of resemble Shaggy lately. HAIRCUT TIME.)
    - I'm an art student. =D
    - I love huge dogs (especially dobermans, rottweilers, pit bulls, and the like).
    - I love cats despite my horrible allergy. =(
    - I have three P!nk posters on my wall. I don't know if it's stereotypical or not, but it does kind of scream "DYKE" (well, them and the rainbow flag, anyway). =P She's just so damn hot.
    - I'm a liberal and an environmentalist and I don't eat red meat.
    - I'm a feminist. (Which so shouldn't be a stereotype but I've heard things like "[something something] ...and all those lesbians at FMLA" and A. NOT NECESSARILY, Y'ALL, and B. what the hell difference does it make anyway? ARGH.)
    - I like wearin' suits.
    - I... do actually own power tools and know how to use them. >.> (Granted, I use them all for art projects, so that is not quite as badass as "SO HEY I TOTALLY BUILT THE DECK WE'RE SITTING ON. YOU'RE WELCOME.") ALSO I CAN DRIVE A STICK SHIFT. >:|

But! I wear makeup (granted, mostly to cover the acne scars), I shave, tweeze my eyebrows, I enjoy cute shoes, I love shopping, I do tend to wear girly tops, motorcycles terrify me, and... Uh. Oh, I like Hello Kitty!

So I guess basically, what I am saying is I am a very Kirah-type queer. I think that fits me about to a tee!

  19. I think I fall right in the middle. I don't float into the room, per se, but people seem to get an idea about me early on.

    Some gay traits:

    - I watch Roseanne, Friends, and Chelsea Lately.

    - I listen to Adam Lambert, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga.
    - Most of my friends are girls.
    - I'm somewhat shy around most guys, even if I'm not attracted to them.
    - I don't play or watch any sports.

    Some non-gay traits:

    - I love poker.
    - I'm a good handyman when it comes to TVs and home theaters.
    - I know the horror genre inside and out.
    - I adore big dogs; I typically stay away from cats.
    - I generally dislike sappy romance movies.
    - I buy cheap clothes, never name brand.
