National Coming Out Day (Oct 11, 2010) - Empty Closets - A safe online community for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered people coming out

I thought we should so start a thread about next year's coming out day. I know a lot of us here are still in the closet, including myself. Well, I am setting a personal goal to come out on that day, no matter what. I know it's still a ways off, but it would be awesome to talk about it here.

So if you want to join along and commit to doing the same, post here and say so! I will add you to the list! Then, during that day or the day after we can all share our stories and give support.

This is a really big deal for me, even considering doing this is making me nervous already. I know this will be one of the hardest things I ever do. I don't understand why I have such a mental gap. For the longest time I convinced myself that I never needed to come out, but I realized that I do want to. I've written numerous letters and thought up many other ways of doing it, but I never followed through. When I come out I want to do is directly.

For the next 10 months I'm going to need to build up all the confidence I can!

So, I'm first on the list!

This is a thread we can come to for support, and to rally up for the big day! Yay!

I think that's great that you're working towards coming out. I hope you can get your brain in order to get it done. It's easy to pick a faroff date, since there's something rather "not real" about it. But so long as you keep working towards the goal, that's killer.

Just don't marry yourself to the date. If you get ready earlier, and find yourself ready earlier, just do it.

I cant say i will commit to the list but i will say that i will commit to coming out to someone new by then. oh and i love that the national coming out day is the day before my birthday!! lol

This is a very good thing. I'm already out to several people, but mark me down, this is a project everyone should get involved with to help others who may want or need encouragement to use that as the day to finally come out

I think it is a great idea and I wish you all the best in reaching that goal.

As Lex indicated though, if you are ready or a good opportunity arises to come out before then and you feel this is the right moment, come out.

I come out almost every other day, at parties, when I meet new friends etc (so I'm basically out) but I support each and every one of you. It's not easy but it's well worth not living a lie anymore.

First off, when it comes to finding motivation to come out, you can't start soon enough.
Secondly, of course this thread gets made each year. It's a gay community.

It sounds really nice, but sorry I don't think it's time for me yet. I'm 14 and I really can wait until I find someone I like, my mum will probably ask "Are you sure?" and I wanna give her a clear answer.

For whatever reason I really don't want to come out on National Coming Out Day. Yes, I admit that I don't really feel ready to come out anyway, but I don't know, coming out on some specially designated day just sounds contrived to me.
