Hey, I was just wondering: it seems that there are a lot of allusions and euphemisms used on this site toward things LGBT-related. I don't know what a lot of these things mean, so I was thinking we could write here whatever we don't recognize or fully understand, and then someone else can answer with their definitions. It doesn't even have to be LGBT related either, I guess.

For example, what are "Birkenstocks"?? I can't even spell it.

And what does it mean to "manscape"??:confused2:

Birkenstocks are a type of shoes. They look a little something like this:

Manscaping is generally a term for when a man modifies his body hair in some way (including but not limited to: shaving, waxing, etc.)

Birkenstocks are a type of shoe, as demonstrated by Mr. Black above me. It's considered a stereotype that lesbians, especially the real tough "dykey" variety, all wear birkenstocks, hence why the word is frequently used as part of a joke.

Manscape is a play-on-words of "landscape." Landscaping such as trimming the grass, cutting the hedges, etc, is compared to the idea of a man trimming/cutting some of his body hair. Usually used in reference to pubic hair, but can include other areas as well.

A straight girl who hangs out with a lot of gay guys. I think it may have negative connotations, but I'm not entirely sure.

The male equivalent, who hangs out with a lot of lesbians, is called a "lesbro". Or so I have read. =P

fag-hag is generally pretty positive, I think. But I guess like a lot of words, it depends on the context.

To add one to that, a straight guy that hangs with gay boys is a fag-stag. I think I love that term.

"Faghag" has the negative connotation that the woman cannot actually get a boyfriend, because she's unattractive and can't get a "real man".

My friend mentioned alternative that I think is my favorite LGBT word ever: "fruit fly". It's just a girl that hangs out with gay men. Plus the word fruit isn't as negative, in my mind at least, as the other f word.

From what I understand: Camp is an aesthetic sensibility wherein something is appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value.

    ----------

It has never had that negative connotation....a fag hag is simply a girl who has a best friend who is gay. My best friend Lauren is my fag hag and she's a gorgeous girl. Sometimes it could also be a means of saying they could date, except for the fact the guy is gay lol.

I love the movie the Bad Seed (1956) and everyone tells me it is campy and that the gay community loves it. Soooo that's one thing I know is campy. lol

To elaborate a bit on camp, it describes something that is in bad taste, especially by being over-the-top, melodramatic, or exaggerated in its presentation. Something that is campy takes existing cliches, stereotypes, or conventions to an extreme, larger-than-life level that is obviously fake or over-exaggerated. Camp can be either intentional or unintentional, and it is often appreciated in a kind of ironic, so-bad-it's-good way.

What is considered campy is highly subjective and up to the beholder, which makes the concept hard to precisely define, but for some examples of things generally considered campy, check out this TVTropes article on camp. Camp has a lot of overlap with a similar concept known as kitsch, though the two are a bit different. As for how camp came to be associated with gays, I'm with y'all--absolutely no idea.

where I live, camp means stereotypically gay acting. You might call a straight man with a lisp and a limp wrist camp for example.

also, my mum wears Birkenstocks. A lot.

Ehh, I object to being called fruity nick though, so I don't think I'd like this term either...
