This is the carving of Jesus on the cross that hangs in my church. It is not a crucifix - it is a Christus Rex. It doesn't show Jesus dying, it shows the resurrected Jesus in his glory about to ascend to his throne. What is fascinating is how the artist, Edgar Keene, has depicted Jesus: no scars, no beard and while not bulky, fairly buff. I've never seen anything else like it:

I think the crucifix at my parish outdoes even that one as far as buffness goes: I always thought Jesus looks just a little too ripped, and considering it was a crucifix, not very pitiful. Fortunately, the newer one in our smaller side-chapel is a much more traditional looking crucifix.
Mike-the one that strikes me about yours is that Jesus looks so stoic. My church's looks a lot like Kevin's...except mine is flesh-toned, so it actually looks like a real-life Jesus. Except for the fact that he's white which Jesus probably was not since he lived in the Middle East and spoke Aramaic.
