Default President, First Lady, and Some Senior Members of Polish Parliament Dead in Crash

Quote:
SMOLENSK, Russia – Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 97, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre in Katyn forest of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland's political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Although initial signs pointed to an accident with no indication of foul play, the death of a Polish president and much of the Polish state and defense establishment in Russia en route to commemorating one of the saddest events in Poland's long, complicated history with Russia, was laden with tragic irony.

It's quite sad...

I was reading about the top members that were killed. Sounds like there will practically be a new administration by the time they replace everyone.

"The entire plane"? Coincidence...? I hope they look into it and find the plane just malfunctioned due to age, and not someone tampering with it.

I think you would know for sure if it wasn't an accident, because the country would be at war soon after.

Who ever said it was another country who did the tampering?

Well, the US fought two wars against countries after non-country Al Qaeda "tampered" with 4 airplanes on Sept 11 Although I think he was referring to the country Poland starting a war, not some other country on the receiving end. Anyway, this is amazingly devastating for Poland.

Um, probably not the best thing to say considering Joey is from New York. Probably not the best thing to say for any of us living here; regardless of what you think about it the fact remains that it was an awful incident. But hopefully Poland can recover from this without too much chaos.

Okay, new direction in this conversation.

Just because it went down in the country doesn't mean that Russia had anything to do with it at all. People suspect it since that Spy was murdered by the Russian govt, but Russia has nothing against Poland. I mean, who knows, but I highly doubt there was foul play.

i knew sep 11 would get dragged up so sad, whoever did that really did win, not by the act as horrible as it was, but its really put fear and sorrow in the hearts of Americans creating a new era of paranoia

this incident isn't related, and yes its dubious that the entire senior cabinet is taken out but it wont be Russia they wouldn't do it in their back yard. until other wise stated its simpler for everyone to just treat it as a tragedy.
