Default Question

This may be a dumb question, but I'm curious. What is sapphic or a sapphist? I've seen it under the orientation for lesbians on this site, but I've never seen or heard that word before seeing it here. Does it mean gay? Or is it something specific to lesbians?

It comes from the name of an ancient Greek poet named Sappho, who was considered to be a lesbian and wrote about young women.

Sappho was a famous Greek poet, who lived on the Isle of Lesbos. She wrote about female lovers of hers, and thus, the origin of the word lesbian. Sapphic can either mean a type of poetry which Sappho used, or it can be in reference to lesbian...ness.

Note: I've never actually heard Sapphic in reference to sexuality. I've only heard the term Sapphic Poetry.

Haha, thanks. I didn't know that stuff. Island of Lesbos. Lol, it's bad that when I hear that name, I think of South Park.
