    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/201...no_vote_would_block_dems_from_approving_.html

Basically: Because the senators in Albany cannot settle on the budget for the coming year they have been doing weekly extensions since February/May. Finally two dissident Democrats (Democrats hold a majority in the NY State Senate [which is not normal due to the conservative politics of the northern part of the state]) threaten to not vote to extend the budget because of Governor Paterson not cutting certain areas in the budget to meet the deficit.

This means that if they do not extend the budget another week...New York government related offices, services, etc would shut down. That would mean no police, no firemen, possibly even affecting public transportation and public services not provided by the national government. New York would essentially shut down.

    This is not good.

Wait...so the entire state of New York would be without a state government?

This sounds like something from a movie.

Without paid state hired emergency people you mean. There are tons of volunteers anyway. A certain event about 9 years ago proved that New Yorkers are amazing in the way of self support.

^But 9/11 affected one contained area. This is affecting an entire, gigantically populated, very influential state.

I don't know if you've noticed, but I care not for Upstate NY. (sorry Daniel xD <3)

I think everything will turn out fine, that this governmentless existence will be averted somehow.

I always view NYC and surrounding places as a seperate area myself.

I hope so. It'd suck if it didn't.

Except the majority of your food is supplied by...guess what! Upstate. Honestly, upstate has done well on it's own for a long time. It is Long Island/NYC that needs the most state help. It's downstate that would be screwed.

    Wow.

Reminds me -to a bigger degree- of when Arnold held the schools budget 3 months in 2007. He caused my financial aid to not come for a month after school started, which is what prompted my mental breakdown D:

    Hopefully things get resolved.

No reason to worry. Happens to state governments all the time. The states usually allow the public safety service , i.e. police, ems, to keep running. Often times those are funded by the locals they serve.

What happens is that state offices, schools, DMV, etc are shutdown for a few days. Usually after a couple of days the last few hold outs switch their votes.
