Is it just me or is there a connection between homosexuality and left-handedness?

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by AlexPatrickMorrissey, Jul 11, 2010.

  1. Hmm...

Myself and a lot of other LGB I've seen are lefties. Is it just me or is there a pattern?

Totally right-handed here. Again, I think it's just you.

I'm left handed for most things, and i've noticed a correlation too. You can compare the random occurrences of people being born gay and people being born left handed too, they're very similar 'traits' i guess.

There are several studies, and there does appear to be a fairly strong correlation. Left-handers are about 10% of the population. Gay people are also about 10% of the population. If left-handers were a normal distribution of the gay population, then about 10% of the gay population would be left-handed, and about 1% of the total population would be gay AND left-handed.

But both anecdotally and from studies, that does not seem to be the case. Among my 10 closest gay friends, 4 are left-handed. And among a completely different group I was with several years ago, we happened to discover that among 4 of us in the car, (all of whom were gay men), *all* of us were lefthanded. The statistical likelihood of that happening entirely by chance is pretty low.

I'd love to see some wider evaluation of this, and I'd also be curious to know if it extends to lesbians or is only with gay men.

That's odd. I'm right handed, however.

Right-handed... Not surprisingly, mostly only the lefties are going to find this interesting and worth looking into :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I know quite a few left-handed heterosexuals. I'm left-handed because my dad is. *shrugs*

I'm definitely more book smart than kinesthetic. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

All of the left-handed people I know (of all sexualities) are all super book-smart and would rather not do hands-on projects. =/

i'm right handed..but i'm goofy footed--which basically means i have better balance on my left foot. but i'm odd.. pretty much everything i do is at complete odds with every other thing i do.

I think that it's normal to be better than the opposite foot from your good hand. My right foot used to have better balance, although now they're fairly equal.
