It's pretty common in nature, actually, especially in marine species. In fact, clownfish do the same thing when no female is present. Nemo's dad should've technically turned into a "she," after Nemo's mom died, but Disney would probably not have been too happy with that.
that's how the dinosaurs in jurassic park started breeding remember? cause they used DNA from some frogs or something that change sex if there are no females present.
This happens in chickens as well, rarely. The hen can be totally healthy and laying perfect eggs before completely transforming into a rooster due to hormone changes~.
