For one of my college essays I have to choose one of my favorite quotes and use it as a jumping off point to tell them about an event or experience that helped me define one of my values. According to the advocate guide, this is among the few colleges that "Actively recruits LGBT students" so I definitely want to make that apparent in my application. I am looking for a quote that involves being true to yourself basically, because I want to talk concisely about my coming out experience and what it meant to me. Anyone have any famous or recognizable quotes in mind? thanks!
Kurt Cobain - I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not. It's in my av and I just love it. It's one hell of a quote.
Here are some that are specifically to do with homosexuality: Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands? ~Ernest Gaines When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one. ~Epitaph of Leonard P. Matlovich, 1988 Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere. ~Agnes Repplier Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. ~Dr. Seuss Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself. ~Harvey Fierstein
You're welcome It's always been a favourite of mine. It's humorous, yet has a deeper, more serious meaning to it.
Or you could use the original quotation that Cobain is referencing: "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not." --Andre Gide.Guess it depends on whether you want to go traditional/original or modern. But if you want to go literary, you could try "This above all: to thine own self be true,/and it must follow,/as the night the day,/thou canst not then be false to any man." It's from Hamlet, by Shakespeare. I used it as my graduation quote in my high school year book a good 2 years before I actually got past the denial stage and admitted I was gay to myself.
the only one i could really think of is: "People fear that which is not understood" that's my myspace quote, by the way!
Then shall we, perhaps, change this to a general good quotes thread? Personally i've always loved: "Challenge Your Preconceptions Or They'll Challenge You" But of course there's always: "Love Is Blind"
