Default Report: N. Korea fires on S. Korea, killing 1 and injuring 15

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapc...pt=T1&iref=BN1

Quote:
North Korea fired artillery toward its tense western sea border with South Korea on Tuesday, killing at least one South Korean soldier, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Two civilians and 13 other South Korean military personnel were injured, with three of the soldiers seriously hurt, Yonhap said.

At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island in the Yellow Sea after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said...

Love it how the news doesnt indicate whether this is over or not. Oh well, I suppose they have to move on quickly so they can fit in their report about Strictly Come Dancing.

On several tv channels they are saying that South Korean ministers are in an emergency meeting, trying to figure out what to do.

I'm wondering if we should be worried over here in North America too...I do however hope that the injured will be okay...

We should. The reason being South Korea is a major ally for us in Asia. And even though the red scare is over, we are still strong against the spread of communism.

Not to mention, of North Korea successfully take South Korea, they will get technology in their position that will allow them to send nuclear missiles to any country on the planet. That's a major issue, because I don't think (and neither does the government) that North Korea would pass up an opportunity to destroy us. I mean, we did level their entire country during the Korean War. They feel they should do the same.

We should protect South Korea in the case war continues again. But until that does, we should do our best to mediate between the two.

Also, I posted this in another thread:

Quote:
How stupid is North Korea? I mean, I know it's entire population is brain washed, but their government has to have some intelligence.

How can they not realize that the entire world is either against them or at very best neutral towards the issue and wont get in.

The only real support of N.Korea is Iran. But Iran only supports N.Korea because of their policy towards the US.

And plus, we could easily beat N.Korea. We did it once, we can easily do it again. There is just one problem. They have nuclear bombs, they're obviously retarded. So there is nothing stopping them from nuking South Korea (or Japan, although a lot of their missiles misfunction before getting that far.)

What's bad though is even if South Korea takes over North Korea, which I believe to be inevitable with the amount of support South Korea has, the public of the once weak but seemingly powerful North Korea will..let's say they won't play nice with the radical change in political power and a smack of common knowledge upon their brainwashed heads.

But I believe if the public of N.Korea knew the truth, they would rebel. Or at least try to.

I'd much rather see N.Korea and S.Korea end the war finally with a treaty and become independent nations to avoid fighting and let them be. But it's obviously past that point now.

Both S. and N. Korea have enough conventional weapons along the DMZ to do substantial damage..couple that with that lunatic with the hair having nuclear ability means this situation has the potential to get very ugly very quickly.

While it is important to have international condemnation, the key to this entire mess is Beijing. China is like the big kid on the block that no one wants to piss off, they are one of N. Korea's only allies and they would be the only ones who could carry enough influence off the bat to put a quick end to this.

This will be an interesting testament to the strength is US/China diplomatic relations.

We already have quite a presence in South Korea as it is, so IF something happens, we will be involved. But I'll love it when people say that it's none of our business.

if North Korea insists on continuing to make this conflict worse they are done. China is not going to risk war with the U.S. and will drop them like my mom dropped my brother as a child. But srsly you have to look at the options

-N Korea doesn't do anything else and we go back to that "peace" ish thing
-N Korea continues to do stuff and China sais "bad" and they stop
-China sais "bad" and they keep going, china drops them and they are all alone and either give up or loose
-China sais "go for it" and we are in some shit and im moving out of the country but i doubt they are risking nuclear war over N Korea

China, even though an ally with N.Korea, openly condemns what N.Korea is doing. China wont fight against N.Korea, but they definitely wont fight for it. To China, N.Korea is a disgrace to communism.

Apparently they could've done this because Kim Jong Il is having a few problems holding on to power.
I doubt they want it to go much further... yet.

China is what is interesting here. I can see this turning into another coldwar type situation. Mutually Assured Destruction is in play here. The economies of the US and Chin are intertwined. Either side could seriously injure the other without firing a single shot, however the attacker would also be injured. Thus preventing either side from doing anything.

Remember the Korean War never ended. There has just been a cease fire in place for nearly 60 years.

China and the United States are much different countries now. My thought is that you'll see saber rattling from both, but ultimately neither will do anything.
