I'm not superstitious, especially when I don't believe in the 2012 hubbub, but is anyone else feeling slightly unnerved about earthquake after earthquake?

It has been upgraded to m8.8: http://tvnz.co.nz/world-news/8-quake-jolts-japan-triggers-tsunami-warning-4058622
Thankfully it was quite a distance from the city and not too shallow of an epicenter (24.3kms deep). Hopefully no tsunamis though...

I'm not in a superstitious 'end-of-the-world' way; the tectonic plates are pretty big and it's not unsurprising that when one of them moves it will have a knock-on effect in different areas.

Upgraded to Magnitude 8.9 apparently. They're also experiencing 7.4+ Aftershocks...

The earthquake is the 5th biggest in history, if the 3 9.0's are counted as #4 together.
They also were hit by a Tsunami, with warnings for more still on alert.

My thoughts are with everyone in Japan, especially some of our members. :frowning2:

So far only one confirmed fatality, though many news sites are reporting thousands dead, though unconfirmed. This is horrible. >_<

Tsunami Warning Issued for pretty much the entire eastern coast of Asia, the islands around that area, and Hawaii.

Based on past earthquakes, there's a high chance a warning will be issued to the west coast of north and south america, and probably Australia/New Zealand. :S

Like I said, just guessing based on past EQs.

The tsunami watch was just issued for Alaska to the Mexico Border.

A tsunami advisory was issued for most of alaska. Hawaii is still under warning.

    So many different terms...

EDIT: Now the Pacific Watch has become a Warning... Fun. >_<

I am awake till this passes. I am in oregon, so our local channels have been on since the tsunami hit japan, and we realized that there is a major chance that it is aimed directly as us. I have family in one of the more dangerous places to be during a oregon coast tsunami.

We have been on tsunami warning, and they expect 3-4.5 feet wave... twenty minutes ago, it was 3-4 feet waves... and it seems that they are upgrading the height as they get more data. so it seems there is a very high chance we will get hammered hard.

i kinda doubt much damage (if any) will be done to the pacific coast...?

    [edit] except perhaps alaska

    [edit2]
i don't think there's ever been a tsunami warning for australia from a north asian earthquake, luckily for us we have a whole heap of islands in the way to diffract any waves, especially new guinea, it's like an enormous shield.

Hopefully new guinea and the rest of the pacific is spared

Hmm, well, colour me surprised, i guess this one is really a stinker. The evening news said we didn't have a warning, but this article says differently.... Tsunami warnings in 20 countries including ours.

    http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/11/tsunami.warning/index.html

i reckon we'll be fine though.

From what is being reported here australia is very much in danger. The BBC just had a reporter from New Zealand saying they are worried the north island will be hit.

i'ma go out on a limb and optimistically call that an over-reaction... especially for australia. NZ i can see being a bit more in the firing line, they don't really have any big mitigating land masses in the way like we do.

even if we do get a bit of wave action, hardly anybody lives up north where it would be.

As for NZ, we can thank the inverse square law for the reduced energy of the waves. They should be much dissipated by the time they've travelled 9,000 km.

So, apparently, my sister just packed up and fled inland.

She's really freaked out at this, lol. If a tsunami happens, it happens.
