Hey guys from Melbourne and who are in year 12 ie CelebrityHead. Haha.

How'd you go on your English exam today.

My Hard times essay (Part 1) was a bit of a weak, but I think I covered it quite well.
Gradgrind was not so hard a man as Mr Bounderby, and he was not at all unkind. Do you agree?

My Man for all Seasons essay (part 2) was rather strong, despite the question being awkward and narrow.

Hope everyone else who sat it went well.

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

 I'm so happy with how I did! Seriously over the moon! Like, obviously you don't know how well you've done 'til the results come out, but I'm happy!

    I did:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (Part 1) //took half an hour to write the title on the script books! LOL
'This is the story of coming to accept that the world is not perfect.' Discuss

    and

A Man for all Seasons (Part 2) - You did this one right, Micah?
'A Man for all Seasons demonstrates that a society's values are really only the desires of its most powerful group. There is no place for the individual.' Discuss.

I liked that topic much better that Part 1 for that text. What did you think?
OMG LOL and wtf was up with that massive baby on a leash? Hahaha so funny/weird!

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

The baby on the leash nearly made me lol.

Yeah, I did A Man for all Seasons demonstrates that a society's values are really only the desires of its most powerful group. There is no place for the individual.' Discuss. since the the Common Man question in relation to More wasn't the greatest.

I basically looked at who makes the values (looking primarily at Henry and Cromwell),
Those who "give in" to those values in order to survive (looking at Norfolk and Wolsey)
and what happens when you, as an individual, try to stand against those values (looking at More).

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

    For A Man for all Seasons I;

Examined the most powerful group (Henry), looked at who conforms to Henry's demands, in order to survive (King's Council, except More - especially Cromwell and Wolsey) and discussed how More is an individual / doesn't have a place in society

Two text responses, an analytical 'coherently structured piece of prose' and a point of view piece (letter to the editor, speech, editorial, etc)
    So four pieces altogether.

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

That's interesting cos the format of the English Studies (what I would take to be the equivalent) exam in SA is completely different.

There are four sections; Single Text Responce, Paired Text Responce, Poetry Responce and Critical Reading. Every year it is mandatory to do either Single, Paired or Poetry, and you choose wheter to do one of the other two. Critical Reading is always compulsory

For instance, last year Paired Texts Responce was compulsory, so you had to do an essay on Paired Texts, either an essay on Poetry or a Single Text and the Critical Reding (basically a comprehension)

So basically we only do two essays, and usually 6 questions on critical reading (although the answers to these questions are the same length as an essay anyway)

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

3 hour exam. 15 minutes reading time at the start.

    1 hr Essay 1
    1 hr Essay 2
    30 minutes Text Analysis
    30 minutes persuasive piece
    ------------

All my subjects are unfortunately scaled down, but hey, they're what I enjoy doing.
English (scaled down about 1 mark)
Maths (scaled down about 1 mark)
Psychology (scaled down about 1 mark)
Visual communication (scaled down about 3 marks)
IT (scaled down around 2 marks)

    Time: what Micah just said!

I'm also doing Music Solo Performance (scaled up), Maths Methods (scaled up), Business Management (scaled down), and Software Development (scaled down, I think?)

However, all my stuff's gonna become the main ingredient in a massive schoolies' bonfire

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

ok so let can you guys put this in like a way i can understand it, what i get from reading your replies is that what you get on these tests will tell you what your going to do later on or will it just judge what university youll get in to?

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

In South Australia (I think it's the same nationally, but might not be), we sit exams, which are the same state wide. The results from these exams are about 30 - 50% of out final grade for that subject. The final scores of our 5 subjects that we did that year are added together, then compared to everyone else in the state. Then we get a score (Our TER) which is basically how we went, based on how everyone else went.

So, say I got 70 when I added up my final grades. If most people got below 70 when they add up their grades, I would get a high TER (around 90). But if most people got above 70, I would get a low TER (around 50). TERs are out of 100, but the highest you can get is 99.95

The TER is then used to see which university course you get into. By this, I mean that if a certain course has a quota of only allowing 20 ppl in, they let in the 20 people with the highest TERs that applied for that university course

Sorry if i explained it incorectly or confusedly, and Im sure Micah or CelebrityHead will be able to tell if there are any differences between here and Melbourne

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

That's pretty much exactly what Victoria does too, only we have ENTERs, not TERs

(that was a good explanation too, by the way )

    Re: Melbourne English Exam

I had my music solo performance exam today! Went so good, like 10 times better than when I was practicing at home this morning
That counted for 50% of my overall score, so now just 25% left to go from the written exam (the other 25% was from the year's various assessments, or SACs as we call them)

Good luck Dave, for your english exam tomorrow!
Maybe this thread should be for like just exams in general?

EDIT: Sorry, it's past midnight so it was yesterday, Sunday 4th Nov lol

I've got Physics tomoro, but Im gunna do crap in it, oh well

hehe I am doin Specialist, and yes I am insane
