There was a straight pride group being advertised all over the gay pride facebook page earlier, and the person advertising it didn't sound homophobic, though s/he did sound kinda naive.

I replied that it was created by people who didn't realise how privileged they already are, and that they don't understand pride (a response to bigotry) and don't need it, but I also think that all people should always be proud of who they are.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think of straight pride? And also would you mind resolving my doublethink?

Isn't that kinda like white pride? I guess there's no harm in it if they aren't attacking, but she does sound naive and that could quickly turn ugly.

Yea I think there's no reason to advertise your pride in being the more favored option by society. I.e. being straight, white, male. Etc. It just seems like being conceited. There's no reason to have "straight pride" groups, etc when it already is already accepted by society and nobody is ranked lower, paid less, disrespected, looked down up, etc. because of it.

I think it's dumb and expresses wilful blindness to one's privilege.
Really, would anyone have thought of having straight pride other than as a reaction to the gay one? It's like trying to ignore the point of lgbt pride instead of understanding the need for it.

Do I have to go into this...just look at history:
English Pride/American Pride (remember that America was originally part of England but they eventually seceded from UK.
English Pride/French Pride (when Quebec was trying to secede from Canada...though didn't actually happen, still)

Though I know that's a little more nationality. As for minorities.

Black Pride and White "Pride" (Segregation/Desegregation movement)
Female Pride and Male "Pride" (Suffrage Movement)
and now Gay Pride and Straight "Pride" (Gay Rights Movement)

Basically the opposite side, the ones with the power will ALWAYS say they should have "pride" too, but the fact is they have no right to it. They have all the power already and don't need even more by having their own pride group. But so long as they're not trying to incite anything I suppose it's not as bad...just being naive.

I think people see gay pride and say, "Why don't we have a pride group?" It's just dumb. People are looking for attention and will do whatever they have to do to get it.

Gladly. The word you’re looking for to describe how everyone should feel is confidence. Anyone can be confident, whether they belong to an oppressed minority or not, but confidence is different from pride. Pride is defined as “a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction derived from an achievement or an admired quality”. Being gay could hardly be called an admired quality (in most social contexts, at least), so that leaves us with gay pride resulting from the fact that it is in achievement. The reason it is considered an achievement is because society tells us that being gay is wrong and we shouldn't like ourselves because we are gay, but we do like ourselves, and we are proud of being able to do that. In other words, our confidence is the source of our pride, because our confidence is an accomplishment. A straight person has never had to overcome a cultural message that he/she should not like him/herself because he/she is straight, so that's why straight pride is a ridiculous concept. A straight person can feel pride for liking themselves in spite of some other aspect of their lives that has made it difficult for them to like themselves, but that is hardly straight pride.

In short, recognizing the difference between pride and confidence should be sufficient to resolve your doublethink.

If they want Straight Pride that's fine.

But isn't Gay Pride there to make people feel proud when they're told by bigots/homophobes not to feel proud? If so, are straight people ever told not to feel proud of their sexuality? No, they're left alone, which is why it's a bit silly to have straight pride when you don't really need to feel proud because you're already accepted.

I'm sorry but that completely daft. They don't have deal with bigotry and ignorance. They don't have to risk being disowned by everyone they know simply because they want to be themselves. They don't have to deal with the internal conflict that someone goes through when they discover their sexuality. And they aren't looked down as freaks or sex maniacs.

They should be happy that they have to go through any of that stuff. They're the lucky ones.
