I'm a big music geek, and I enjoy screamo music, but I know a lot of people have different takes on it. What is your guys' opinion of screamo music

In my opinion it has no artistic value and requires a minimum of talent.

It depends on the band. Some screamo music I like and others I don't.

I'm that way, too. I don't like it when it's 24/7 screamo during a song. I like it in small amounts.

if it can still be counted as music ill probably like it no joke, but some screamo is just not musical in any way shape or form; though a lot is and its really good

i don't like it very much- usually a good, strong, solid drumbeat, which is essential for any good song, but the lack of actual music turns me off of it. but there's this one screamo song with enough melody to make it enjoyable- it's called To A Friend by the band Alexisonfire. here's a link: YouTube - ‪Alexisonfire- To a Friend lyrics‬‏ sorry i don't know how to directly place the vid on this site- ah, i'm so uncomputer savvy :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I like it in small amounts, I don't like songs that are screaming the entire time.

I think there is some misuse of the term "screamo" going on here.

Do we mean all music with screaming vocals? Or This?

But you really can't call any band that uses screaming vocals "Screamo". It's mislabeling as a genre.

This band uses a lot of screaming vocals as well as clean vocals. They are nowhere near screamo. They are Progressive Metal.

    Ah labels...

Genres have become so complicated you need a bloody course to understand it all XD. A band may not be "screamo" if they have a few songs with screaming vocals but if one of those songs is mostly made up of screaming vocals its safe to say its a screamo song.

    -

My personal opinion on "screamo" music is that its 99% shit, mostly unoriginal and is more akin to noise then music. However some songs\bands do utilise "screaming" in choruses etc. in a tasteful manner and can be a good way to emphasize and express a lyric or emotion.

I just dont see the appeal in songs in which the vocals are so distorted you cant understand anything they are saying, which renders having lyrics at all utterly pointless, and can also drown out sound of the instruments in the background. Not to mention how it lacks any diverse display of emotions.

Instrumentally, most screamo music is incredible. Blazing guitars and driving beats.

I'm not a huge fan, but I love screaming in my music.

My friend's new husband is a vocalist in a screamo band. I try to be supportive but I'm just not a fan. Thinking I might have to pre-game a little bit before their first concert if I'm ever going to survive it.

I agree with Joey, what you're referring to are vocal affects (not effects, which are usually filters) put on by the vocalist. Much like opera, there are different types of voices that are used based on the band, genre etc. "Death Grunts" are one of the most common, familiar to anyone who listens to death metal. There are singers who do more of a screech, such as Dimmu Borgir (symphonic black metal) or start sounding like cookie monster (such as Amon Amarth). Some blurt mindless lyrics, others (Opeth is a great example) practically recite poetry. Its an art form - some love it, others hate it. But please for the love of whatever god you worship don't say that it isn't music.
