Default Exotic Foreign Foods

So, serious ass question here:
Would any of you try dog?

I know it's an "ugly stereotype" but some people seriously eat dog in South Korea.
How do I know this, you ask?

There's a dog farm right behind where I'm living.
Also, a group of my American friends went out to try it for "shits and giggles". They even got to pick the dog :/

I'm not judging Koreans at all. It is their culture and I think that's fabulous for them.
They've grown up with a culture where not only can a dog be a companion, but it can also be food. Versus our culture when the dog has only ever been man's best friend.

But back to the question...
I love meat and I love eating. I especially love eating meat.
Would I knowingly try dog? No, absolutely not.

Would I pick up a piece of mystery meat and try it without asking what it is? Definitely.

If I found out later that it was dog, would I overreact in any way/shape/form? No, I don't think so.
If it tasted good, would I eat more? Honestly, I probably would... You can't argue with taste.

I don't want to give anyone a negative view of Koreans... A lot of my friends were embarrassed to tell me they've eaten it, and restaurants that serve dog are hard to find.
Again, it is their culture and I'd ask that you don't judge them based on it.

So some of them eat dog, so what?

Now that that is out of the way, I'd probably try it. I probably wouldn't go there and pick out a dog, but if there was a restaurant that had it on the menu I would probably try it.

Mystery meat? I would be scared to try that. I feel like they'd be trying to feed me their placenta. ;o;

If I knew it was dog, probably not. All I would be able to think of is my dog staring at me.
BUT saying that, when I was a kid my cousin was in FFA and had a pig. It's name was tamales. We played with the pig and spent time with it every day. And when it came time, we killed it. And turned it into dang tasty tamales. So I guess it really does depend on culture and how you were raised.

Obviously not mystery meat...

But when I ask what we're eating for dinner and my friends reply 'Ddakkalbi' or 'Dwaejigogi' it's not like I can whip out the internet and google whatever it is.

What I meant was if we're at dinner and it's served to me, I will eat it and ask questions later.

It was a joke ಠ_ಠ

Either way, I still wouldn't eat it.

At the risk of alienating some people with this confession: yes, I would order and eat dog, if I found myself in a restaurant that served it. Just like I try most any exotic food, given the chance.

I would rather not pick it out, though. I wouldn't be able to look an animal in the eye before it's killed for my sake.
However, as with any meat, I'd make damn sure I ate every last bit of it to make sure the animal did not die for nothing.

Ew, I personally don't even like dogs, dead or alive. So I would never try to eat one! I might try to eat squid or turtle though.

I also know they eat monkeys too.

They have a table with a round hole which would fit a monkey's head, the live monkey get put in a cage type of thing and the head is forced and held through the hole in the table by a type of device. The person then takes a saw and cuts the skull open.

Is apparently a delicacy to eat the brain as raw and as fresh as possible and apparently quite expensive. Usual top level executives on a conclusion of a business deal enjoys this.

But me personally, I do not eat any meat at any Chinese take-away or any Asian run food business. Here in Windhoek the Chinese shops are regularly closed by health inspectors because they would pick up road kill on the streets and serve that to the customers.

I personally will never eat a dog, or cat or even a dolphin or shark... there are boundaries when it comes to food, especially meat.

No, I just couldn't since I've grown up knowing dogs as pets and not food.

As said by Lief, it depends on the culture and where you live.

Ummm yea LOL I don't know where the hell you heard that, but Koreans don't eat monkeys or monkey brains. I believe that is China (and I suppose not all Chinese people eat monkey brains either, it's like one of the provinces that people do that, I think)
I would know since I was born in S.Korea and was raised there before moving to the US.

As for OP's question, no I wouldn't eat dogs. Not that I judge, but I've never tried one, and probably never will. Heck, I don't like eating too much meats in general so yea.

I'm a vegan now, so obviously not. Only several months prior I was a huge meat eater, and I still think my answer would be no. In America we are raised for the most part being shown happy cows/pigs/chickens living wonderful lives on farms with plenty of sun and space. We are disassociated from the killing of these animals for food. We don't think about it, but how many of us would be able to kill one of these animals and prepare it for consumption?

I find that in small farming culture (where one raises, cares for, and then kills an animal for food) there is more feeling involved. Surely it is not necessary to eat animals, but at least those who put some of their life towards nurturing the animal have more of a connection to the sacrifice made in its death.

Too bad the overwhelming majority of American meat comes from factory farms where there is absolutely no feeling involved for the animals at all.

To answer the OP, I don't think I would eat dog, dolphin, or any sort of primate due to the level of their respective intelligences. I'm weird about eating pigs for the same reason. It just kind of creeps me out to think that I'm eating something with the mental facilities of a human three year-old.

Yeah... I was about to say. I've heard nothing about monkey and all of my Korean friends are trying to get me to eat their most "exotic" foods (I'm looking at you, live octopus).

That being said, I would try brain.
Just don't expect me to do the preparation.

Tell me about it . Seeing videos of some of that stuff was just about the most heart-rending thing I've ever seen.

@JRNY & @BeautifulStranger

a friend of mine went there for a business trip for Intel a few years ago. She told me this as she too was there for that dinner, but she politely declined, too afraid she might insult them or their culture.

Though I have to say she could not say where exactly, only that it was in a very, very up scale upmarket hotel and that was at the top floor restaurant. She did how ever said there were Chinese, Korean, Japanese a few South Africans and a few Americans at this business/lunch meeting. So it could have been to please the other Asian cultures and not necessarily for the Korean culture.

@Beautiful strange... If you ever eaten the bone marrow of a meat? well brains are exactly the same taste. We have that as a delicacy with sheep brain, but you buy it in a packet at the butchery so you don't cut open any skull. i guess the farmer do cut the skulls if they wish to eat brains LOL

That makes a little more sense. I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, but it just doesn't sound Korean... I don't even think monkeys are native to Korea...

It's like with Jajangmyeon and Omureisu... A lot of people associate them with Korea because they're popular here, but they're not. (Jajang is Chinese, Omureisu is Japanese)

As for bone marrow, I'm fairly certain I have.
I tend not to question what I'm given for dinner, I was always taught to be gracious and accept it. (That's not supposed to sound as elitist and condescending as it does)
Like with Blutwurst (blood sausage) when I was in Germany... It was in a jar on the breakfast table in front of me, so I cracked it open and tried it (despite the many warnings from other Americans) and I absolutely loved it.

Ahhhh! I just checked, and yes, I have eaten bone marrow.
I'm from Alaska and when we prepare caribou/moose meat, we eat the bone marrow as well. So I've eaten it at family gatherings.

No I wouldn't, I'm a vegetarian. I disagree with eating dogs as much as I do with eating beef, pork, fish or any other animal.
